FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Students for Justice in Palestine to Hold Vigil for Children on December 10

Pittsburgh, PA December 3, 2004 – In order to memorialize the children who have died on both sides in the Palestine-Israel conflict, the University of Pittsburgh Students for Justice in Palestine will hold a candlelight vigil on December 10, 2004. The event will include speakers and a reading of the names of the child victims of the conflict in the past year.

The event will occur at 5:30 p.m. on December 10, 2004 in front of the patio of the William Pitt Union on the University of Pittsburgh campus. The exact location and start time are subject to change. In the case of inclement weather, the event will move inside the Union.

Since the beginning of the al-Aqsa Intifada in September 2000, at least 772 children have died—117 Israelis and 655 Palestinians. In addition to the deaths of children, thousands more have died—nearly 4,600. But many in the United States remain in the dark that so many have died so needlessly. So, Students for Justice in Palestine has planned the vigil to remember the children and to open the eyes of Americans.

The purpose of the event is to educate both students and the community at large about the effects of the conflict on the innocent. Speakers are yet to be finalized, but the planners hope to have two to three guests to speak. Following the speakers, a list of children who have been killed will be read. The names will include those under the age of 18 who have died since January 1, 2004.
