The Shetch factory celebreates a full year of occupation as an adverse possesion, and an experiment in alternative liveing. Rain water collection and solar power are key ingredients in this action...Squatt the earth...

The Sketch Factory celebrates a full year of occupation as an adverse possesion. With six bedrooms and a full basement there is plenty of room to welcome travelers.
The house was empty for several years as the previous owner was disgusted with the conditions of the house. Moveing in January 2004 from a squatted house several door up, new locks were put on a door was hung and the work began.
The house was in a terreble condition, plaster holes and foul ruggs were in many of the rooms. The plumbing was gone and there was a missing window on the top floor. A rain water collector was built and solar panels were located. The house ran full solar for 11 months then late a late November wind storm claimed the solar panels. City electric is running in the house currently.
The neiborhood is very welcoming to the inhabitants, several neibors have benifitted with borrowed tools and bike parts. The area is very run down and in need of people that care about the neiborhood. The city is hurting economicaly and the budget to tear down abandoned buildings is small. They would rather have people occupy buildings and fix them up rather than to tear them down.
There are several houses in the area that are ready for possesion. The hope is to make the house a collective, with space available for Food Not Bombs or a similar group, and posssibly and info shop. There are three coputers available for use and internet access is available. A free radio station is in the works.

This is the rainwater collector. The roof is flat and the collector is two stories up on a addition. The garden hose heats the water for summer time hot showers!! Hoses run into the house for sink shower and toilet. This is a very doable setup and everything except for some plastic hose t\\\'s was dumpstered.
