For the first time, Pittsburgh will be hosting a film series featuring documentaries, shorts, and feature films that narrate the Palestinian story. The Pittsburgh Palestine Film Series will take place October 21 – December 2, 2005. The film series is coordinated by the Pittsburgh Palestine Solidarity Committee, a longstanding community organization, with the Students for Justice in Palestine, and has received partial funding through a generous grant from the Three Rivers Community Foundation.
Films were carefully selected to illustrate a broad range of topics, including: the historical background of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict; the affect of conflict on children; the affect of military occupation on daily life; the status of Palestinian women; American activism in Palestine; and the Palestinian diaspora in the United States. Notable films from the festival include I am Palestine, Jerusalem 1948, Women in Struggle, Arna’s Children, and Rachel: An American Conscience. Screenings will be introduced by community members and students who originate from Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel. The screening of the film short about the Palestinian diaspora in America, I am Palestine, will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director, Suha Araj. Each film will be followed by an open discussion forum.
Films will be screened at The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, the Friends Meeting House, First Methodist Church, the Pittsburgh Mennonite Church, and Monumental Baptist Church.
