FROM NEWS RELEASE:
Activists Mourn Animal's Lives in Funeral March at Victoria’s Secret
Lingerie Company’s Catalogs Destroy Endangered Ecosystems
Pittsburgh- To recognize and mourn the millions of animals killed due to forest clearcuts used to produce Victoria's Secret's catalogs, Pittsburgh’s Voices for Animals of Western Pennsylvania, a local grassroots animal protection organization, will hold a funeral march outside of Victoria's Secret on Saturday morning. The funeral procession will be led by a Grim Reaper in lingerie in symbolic representation of Death at Victoria’s Secret’s hand. The march will start promptly at 12:30 PM and afterwards activists will be standing outside the Victoria’s Secret store in protest. Victoria’s Secret mails out over a million catalogs – 395 million catalogs a year - using un-recycled paper made from endangered old-growth forests. Producing the catalogs threatens the lives of countless birds, mammals, fish, and insect species who depend on intact forests for survival.
WHEN: Saturday, March 4th, 12:30 PM-12:45 PM
WHERE: Victoria’s Secret Shadyside store, 5505 Walnut Street,
Pittsburgh, PA
Two years of investigative research has revealed a direct link between Victoria’s Secret catalogs and the destruction of old growth, endangered forests in the Canadian Boreal, the third largest forest wilderness in the world. Victoria’s Secret’s paper usage contributes to the two acres of Boreal trees cut every minute for paper consumption - destroying entire ecosystems and threatening the atmosphere and waterways shared by wildlife located hundreds of miles away. Land birds, waterfowl, wolves, wolverines, woodland caribou, pine martens and countless other animals depend on the Boreal for their survival - and are all threatened by encroaching habitat loss.
“Victoria’s Secret has to realize that with every acre cut they are having a devastating affect on millions of animals who are dependent on these fragile ecosystems”, said Jon Farinelli of Voices for Animals. “We are holding a funeral service so that these animals gain the recognition that Victoria's Secret never gave them. The company can begin to take responsibility for these lives lost by ending their destructive methods used to produce their catalogs, thereby saving lives in the future.”
Voices for Animals is locally organizing this protest against Victoria’s Secret as part of the national campaign lead by the San Francisco-based group ForestEthics. The campaign demands that Victoria’s Secret maximize post-consumer recycled content in catalogs (achieve 50% post-consumer recycled in five years) and stop purchasing paper from endangered forests, particularly in the Canadian Boreal and Southern U.S.
