A promotional Halloween party for an independently published gothic children's book collaborated on by local artists. October 28th @ the Union Project 1pm BYOB.
Christa Driscoll the pseudonym of a local girl with a min wage job who had a story pop out of her head one night while covering a double shift, Brien O'brien a tattoo artist and former drummer for bif naked who agreed to illustrate the story, Tony Rogers a graduate from Pittsburgh's High School for the Creative and Performing Arts who is working on all the promotional flyers we may someday collect the money to print, and Bryna Brashier who formerly ran the ceramic dept of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts who is making Ocarina's and other ceramics out of the characters are self publishing a gothic children's book entitled Drifting Off.
Now most of the creative work is done and it's time to get people interested in it, so it's time for a Promotional Party! Does a Gypsy Violinist, Human Chess Match, Giant Pinata, Open Mic for poetry reading (or whatever) Candy, Fun, and maybe even Cake sound good to you? If so then join us at the Union Project on the corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues in Highland Park on October 28th from 1-5:30 pm! BYOB (http://www.unionproject.org) Any and all donations will be hugely appreciated especially of candy to fill the giant pinata, money of course, or time if you would like to volunteer to be a part of the human chess match which is a ton of fun anyway but takes a little practise. If you have any questions or ideas e-mail christa at illeasoluminesolum@yahoo.com or go to the website where there is a forum for discussion and a link to Christa's myspace page.
The mic and soundsystem are being rented from the openstage who are a group that provide the soundsystem to the union project at a very reasonable rate, but we would like to ask that anyone who wishes to use the microphone to share any artistic expression, political commentary, practise public speaking, or whatever please donate a few dollars to help cover the cost of renting the system. The time for open microphone will be the first hour of the party which is between 1 and 2pm October 28th which is the saturday before Halloween.
As for the book...
The first thing people always ask is "what is it about?" well, there is no simple answer to that question as it is "about" 16 pages long, most of them illustrations and I have failed to figure out a shorter way of telling someone the story without just...well... reading them the story. Which I prefer not to do until I can really show them the book. It's gothic styled, but it doesn't advocate devil worship or anything of the sort. (no, really, people have asked me about that.) To put it simply its a bedtime story about a boy who cannot sleep, and the strange fate that awaits him. Which is also the plot of other completely dissimilar stories. I reccomend that you read it, but of course I'm the author so I would do that, wouldn't I?
The union project does not necessarily support the views or opinions held by us. (or some similar legalese meaning that they aren't even slightly responsible for our actions or words even though they take place in their building, I never quite remember the quote perfectly, but I hope they won't sue me)
Remember, there might be cake!
