Journalist Charmaine Seitz spoke in Harrisburg on August 27. Her subject was "The Rise of Islamism in Palestine."

Charmaine was for part of her life here in Pennsylvania. She has lived in Palestine for over a decade. She has written for the Economist, Janes Intelligence Digest, the San Francisco Chronicle and al-Jazeera.net.

As managing editor, Charmaine helped to found the bitterlemons publications bitterlemons.org and bitterlemons-international.org, and edited the compilation volume, The Best of Bitterlemons (2007). She has been interviewed as an analyst on radio and television, and has contributed to books on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, including The Struggle for Sovereignty: Palestine and Israel (1993-2005).

She speaks Arabic and Hebrew and has a particular interest in issues of religion.

This half hour talk gives a true inside perspective on what is happening right now in Palestine. But, as she says, that is subject to change as everything is changing quite rapidly on a day-to-day basis there. Charmaine offers some valuable insights and some little known and often over-looked pieces of Palestinian history in this short talk.
