Mission Statement

The mission of the New Orleans Women's Shelter is to help residents regain their personal independence providing the resources needed to find permanent housing, jobs, mental health services, and general health services.

The Women's Shelter strives to create a positive space that is free from violence and oppression. The family-style atmosphere provides the dignity and communal respect and responsibilities that are necessary for the women to thrive while working towards finding their new homes.

History

In January of 2006, Common Ground Relief opened the New Orleans Women's Shelter in the upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans to meet the needs of underserved low-income New Orleans residents. The Women's Shelter is staffed entirely by volunteers from across the nation who donate their time to improving the living conditions for women and children in New Orleans.

Since opening, the Women's Shelter has housed over 200 women, giving them a safe, empowering, and supportive space to live, and providing the tools to regain independence. The shelter acts as a resource center and emergency transitional housing facility with the goals of placing women and children into permanent housing situations, as well as providing the guidance and tools geared towards successfully acquiring and maintaining jobs.

Programs

Transitional Housing

The Women's Shelter provides emergency housing to women and their children.

The Women's Shelter serves women struggling to pay bills, living in substandard housing, recovering from substance abuse, survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and all women in need of immediate shelter.

Case Management

Case managers provide access to resources such as health clinics, job training, substance abuse treatment, education, childcare, and other social services as needed.

Activities such as yoga, art workshops, and house outings are regularly run by volunteers.
