Foreign Minister Garcia-Margallo has noted that due to growing instability in the western region of Algeria, 12 Spaniards, two French nationals and an Italian citizen were evacuated from refugee camps in Tindouf. The 15 aid workers arrived in Madrid on Sunday, after they were transported via a military aircraft. The foreign minister insists that the decision taken by Madrid was done after reviewing the security situation in the area.

In early July, three European aid workers were released after being kidnapped from the Rabuni refugee camp, near Tindouf; however they were later released by their captives, who claim to be a rebel group, who are linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), known as the Movement for Oneness and Jihad (Mujao).

The Spanish foreign minister added that the region has been "converted into a platform for terrorism". In March, northern Mali was seized by Islamist rebels, belonging to the group Ansar Dine, and ethnic Tuareg separatist belonging to the secular National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA). However since then, the alliance between the two groups has deteriorated, which resulted in the al-Qaeda linked Islamist group controlling three major cities in Mali’s north, which include: Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal.
