Activists from Voices for Animals of Western Pennsylvania protested the sale of foie gras at Eleven restaurant in the Strip District, a big Burrito restaurant, on February 14th, Valentine's Day. In June of 2004, big Burrito made a verbal commitment with Voices for Animals to stop selling foie gras at all their restaurants after VFA representatives met with big Burrito Corporate Chef, Bill Fuller at Eleven. Over twenty activists from Voices for Animals came to Eleven on Valentine's Day, one of the busiest days of the year for the restaurant industry, with signs proclaiming "Make Love, Not Animal Suffering" and "Have a Heart, Stop Selling Foie Gras". The annual Pennsylvania Society bash at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City this past weekend was – just it has been for more than a century – the epicenter of organized gluttony and bribery-made-legal for commonwealth lawmakers and industry barons. Pa. Senate President Pro Tempore Robert C. Jubelirer shrugs off such characterizations, and sees the event instead as an opportunity to simply “ let your hair down a bit,” according to a Dec. 11 AP report. However, as a former plainclothes security officer working near the Waldorf, I can say with certainty that streetwalkers and call-girls will have joined at least some of these corporate and bureaucratic bigwigs as they let their hair down. No matter how obvious, simple or logical it sounds, you should never completely believe the official version. And given our federal government's sorry track record on truth-telling, that's the only rational thing a good citizen should do. (text/plain + 1 comment)

On November 16, 40 bus and trolley riders from southwest Pennsylvania gathered for a lunchtime “Public Transportation Appreciation Rally” at the Pennsylvania State Office Building downtown. Public transit riders expressed their appreciation for the system that they rely on, and how it affects their everyday lives, sending the message to Harrisburg that public transportation is a necessity, not an option, for thousands of people everyday. Speakers at the rally also called for just wages and health care benefits for every public transit worker in Pennsylvania. (image/jpeg)
