Pictures from the festivities on Saturday.

Saturdays activities went rather well. The weather cooperated, as did the polic for the most part. A festive atmosphere reigned supreme as people gathered and exchanged ideas. Seemingly a good time was had by all. I even noticed the police crack a smile or two along the route once they realized we had no intentions of causing trouble. Five to six-thousand people participated in the march which reportedly stretched a full five city blocks. The pictures were taken during the rally at the Washington Monument and during the march, along with some at the end of the line in Faragut (sp?) Park. The police had us boxed into the park for a few hours, and once the crowd dispersed considerably allowed some to continue on the planned route. I however did not do this, as sirens and a line of marching police in riot gear gave me a bad vibe that it was possibly a trap to herd us into a smaller, enclosed area and arrest us for deviating from the approved route. Luckily such suspicions were proven false, but I called it a day and started heading back. A successful day I must say as only six arrests were reported and the IMF has annouced that they are considering allowing countries with overwhelming debt to file for bankruptcy debt relief - which happened to be one of the main demands of the citizens upon the IMF. Maybe they are just throwing us a bone, maybe they are beginning to change their tune. Either way, it seems as if someone has been listening. Thanks for lending your voice!

If you have any questions pertaining to the pictures of Saturdays festivities feel free to post them here, I'll try to answer them as best I can. If you fall in love with a picture and need a higher resolution copy for printing just drop me a line. As long as I get photo credit for the below pictures, they are free to use.

Thanks everyone!

Uncle Sam with an inflatable greedy pig in the background. Sam's hat was of the Corporate American Flag, of which there wany in attendance. My girlfriend wore mine over her shoulders during the march and had many people ask where they could get one. Encouraging indeed.

Ready to March...

As we lined up ready to march I shot this one. If you look closely you'll see the fencing and jersey barriers set up to keep the protestors away from teh tourists around the Washington Monument. Early in the rally there were police gaurding the entrance to the fenced in, tourists-only area, but they left as the rally went on.

Counterprotest...
counterprotest.jpg, image/jpeg, 450x338

These were the counterprotestors. Not too many of them really, just a handful spouting forth the same rhetoric as always. Telling us to go to Cuba, a place that they would surely love as one cannot voice one's opinion freely...just what they want. These were the first police seen along the route.

Cops on Sidewalk...

Step onto the sidewalk and get a police baton in the ribs. Police from jurisdictions around the area and from as far away as Chicago lined the route and made sure no one stepped on the sidewalk or got too close to any fancy looking buildings.

This was the end of the line for a few hours. The police did not get involved with any effigy or flag burning activities that went on. Word is that they did however arrest one person for putting tape on the statue. Go figure.

IMC's coverage of DC
by Miles Tuesday, Oct. 08, 2002 at 2:05 PM

Great pictures and coverage of the DC events! Thanks so much to everybody at IMC for helping out and covering this event! This stuff is valueable to me because I was on legal support sitting around at Blue Plains on Friday and Saturday, so I had no idea what the hell was going on downtown or inside Plains (as the cops wouldn't tell us anything). Muchas gracias!

PIGS

Fish_man54@yahoo.com not not

Your page seems to be very unbias and well intended untill the photo caption "PIGS" stands out to me. I have worked in Law Enforcement as a sworn Police Officer for several years now. I am not sure why people get confused...it is my JOB, not WHO I AM. Those are quite different things. The disrespect shown it titles like PIGS and BACON cause many officers to react in a manner you think is rude or disrespectful. I have a job to do and will complete the lawful objectives my supervisors ask me to do. The officers there on that march day, could not have cared any less about what you were trying to say. They were doing thier jobs.
Have some respect for the men and women who risk thier lives daily to be Law Enforcement Officers.
What other type of employees have to put on body armor and a firearm everyday before they go to work? Its profounding when you stop and think about it. Thank you for the opportunity to post my thoughts.

Confused?
by reality check Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003 at 7:54 AM

You are not sure why people get confused? Well, my friend, why are the police confused? My step-father is a policeman. He believes anti-war protest are wrong. He belives Mumia got a fair trial and is guilty. He doesn't understand the IMF, the WTO or the FTAA but his fellow officers in blue have him convinced that any demonstration against authority is wrong. I do not know your opinions concerning these issues but I don't think that was your point. You say you have a job to do and citizens should repect you because everyday you strap on bodyarmor and a firearm to "serve and protect". And that titles like PIGS and BACON are the reasons why officers behave in the way they do? Come on, how about when the cops pepper spray me and call me "hippy" and say I support terrorism and tell me to get a job. I watched your fellow officers drag my brother away and arrest him for a demonstration of free speech on May 4 @ Kent State. He didn't call you a PIG or make any references to BACON. We came out to show our dissent against imperialism and this war. These are the values this country was "suppsively" found upon. You say you do what your supervisors tell you to do? Well, do they tell you to use force, to shoot people with rubber bullets, to spray people with tear gas, to tramble non-violent people with your horses? Is that what they tell you? Do they tell you to abuse the power given to you? Don't make it seem like oh, the police are just trying to do their job and these crazy, left wing people are trying to disrupt the system. It's all their fault. The bit about the officers there that day could have cared less about what protesters were trying to say? How do you know that? I think there are a lot of good cops out there. A lot of cops who do a little more than just what they are told. Many who care. But for every one of them there is the officer who abuses his power. Who kicks the shit out of non-violent people to ensure "justice". The "Blue Knight" mentality that supports a wave of hate. A "brotherhood" of common thinking that "your either with us" or well you get it. How can I have respect for this type of brainwashing mentaliity? What if you spoke up in the lockeroom and said "I do not support this war" or "maybe those protesters are right" maybe George W was wrong to invade Iraq". What would happen Jarrod? You would be ostracized by your fellow "brothers" until your opinion was either silenced or they no longer had your back when you needed it. Think about that.
PEACE in the middle east AND IN OUR STREETS.

You said it!
by Anti-PIG Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003 at 6:52 PM

I think lots of pigs like to abuse their power. They shouldn't have any power to begin with in my opinion.
I saw a 16 year old get beat up and arrested by the cops on March 20, and the kid was doing nothing but standing on a sidewalk. This pissed me off. I have seen PIGS act like PIGS all the time....punching my friend's car, beating kids up, spraying pepper spray directly into eyes, harassing kids cause they are bored, etc. I HATE PIGS cause they are just PIGS! I have never come across a nice cop yet, but maybe someday I will. Here's hoping.....

Yes, that's so incredibly true. Because we all know that every police officer takes every waking moment to club children. So tell me, exactly how would things be if we didn't have any police? Better? Right, that makes a lot of sense. So some cops are cranky. Ever pause to think about why? Seems doubtful. Consider this. You're an officer on the beat, doing your job as the state says you ought to. Give out some tickets, some warnings, and generally deal with a bunch of people just as annoying as you depict the police to be. Maybe they're pissed off because people like you piss them off? There seems to be a lack of empathy here, you see. Mind you I'm not saying the police haven't had their fair share of screwing up, but nobody's perfect, you have to realize that the good far outweighs the bad. Alright, so you got hassled. Better than being stabbed in an anarchy. Long story short, maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge when you have yet to walk a mile in their shoes.

Since when is holding a peace march provoking the cops????????????????
Since when is walking down the street provoking a cop? You see, cops harass innocent people. I have been stopped a couple times by cops for walking up the street at 9:00 in the evening. They shone their lights in my face and demanded to know where I was going. Where was I going? Home from a high school football game, or from work. That was years ago in Dormont of all places, but I still see the same thing. I have seen a cop making out with a young high school girl on a park bench one evening. He told me and my friend to "get the hell out of here," and continued necking the girl who was way too young to be legal.
Of course, not all cops do that, but I have been around too many cops to trust them. They feel they hold a special power where they can do illegal acts but ordinary citizens cannot. If you have money to pay them off, or have a freemason or fraternal order of police sticker on your car, then you are okay. And by implying that without cops, there would be anarchy is total bullcrap. In fact, having a military force to protect ordinary citizens from "evil" people is a brainwashing technique that has been used for centuries in all societies where there is slavery.
The police force arouses anger and hostility among the people. It provokes violence and other acts.

Revenue Generation is Job One...
by Parolee Tuesday, Sep. 16, 2003 at 2:42 PM

...safety is just an excuse.

Police don't prevent crime, they react when a crime has already occured and jump in to gain money for their masters, or slaves fro prison industries. Someone also has to collect and spend bribes from drug dealers.
Federal Street was a great example of this. 10 years ago, the premier open-air drug bazaar in the North Side was on Federal Street, directly across from and in plain sight of Police Station Number 9, renamed Number 1. The pigs needed to keep an eye on their crack and heroin investment. It was just too obvious so they moved a few blocks over to Brighton Road.
The pushers all moved to East Ohio Street, where they peddle their wares with the same police protection and impunity that they became used to on Federal.
I'm curious what effect the police layoffs have had on the regulation of the North Side heroin trade.

Fewer cops, less protection, lower bribes?
