Troop Movements in California

RUMOR that reserves in Western States being called up to break
Longshoreman's strike and lock out in Seattle, Oakland, Long Beach and San
Diego.

Can anyone confirm all night troops movements from Travis Airforce
base? Seems like Reserves from as far away as Arizona are being called up
this Labor Day weekend to act as strikebreakers on the docks of Seattle,
Oakland, Long Beach and San Diego. The Longshoreman are about to go on
strike, and feel this will be a real test of Union resolution and
strength. I certainly hope Congressman Dennis Kucinich who is a true voice
of the working man and woman finds himself on the California West Coast.
When its just too quiet that's when it's time to stay in awareness.

I just spoke to Steve Stallone, communications director for the ILWU.
In this short sound bite, he confirms that Naval strikebreakers are
assembling in San Diego to scab at docks along the West Coast in the event
of a lockout.

Media blackout?
by Evan W. Tuesday, Sep. 03, 2002 at 6:53 PM

The Pacific Maritime Association (bargaining unit for employers) reports that there is no sign of slowdown at the docks. Of course, they admit that it would take some time to actually measure if a slowdown was occurring. The main story to me is (not that surprisingly) that the mainstream media has barely mentioned the rumored troop movements or the claim by the ILWU that navy troops are being assembled in San Diego. I would at least expect the corporate media to pave the way for the use of federal troops, but
there seems to be a blackout entirely. Maybe this is too close to Labor Day for coverage of this action. Public sympathy will wane, they hope...

Another interesting aspect to this is the involvement of the West Coast Waterfront Coalition in the bargaining process and government policy development. These members of the coalition are not even direct parties to the labor dispute, however it is their goods that move through the ports.

There are several companies with a strong local presence in Pittsburgh. Here is the list of members of the Waterfront coalition:
