Water Water
A Celebration
March 16-23, 2003
Water Water is a week-long, collaborative multi-media event paying homage to this irreplaceable element. The March 2003 festival takes a three-layered approach to water, encouraging celebration, education, and empowerment. We'll offer delightful arts activities-performances, installations-facts about water, both in New York and beyond, and an activist tool kit. Water Water is designed to focus public attention on water issues and how they play out on local, regional, national, and global levels. Attendees will leave empowered with resources for staying informed and taking action in protecting our inalienable right to water.
The earth's living creatures are facing the consequences of water's reckless exploitation. Water scarcity may become irreversible in the next few years. Causes include climate change, population growth, pollution, and development. In *Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop the Corporate Theft of the World's Water,* co-authors Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke write: "the human race has taken water for granted and massively misjudged the capacity of the earth's water systems to recover from our carelessness." The book, an inspiration for Water Water, makes a frighteningly strong case for the jeopardy water is in.
From March 16 to March 23, 2003, the Third World Water Forum will take place. The World Water Forum is a triennial meeting that draws policy and decision makers from national governments, international, United Nations and non-governmental organizations, public and private sectors and scientists with interest in water issues. It's critical to draw public attention to the policies under consideration. Timed to coincide with the forum, Water Water will help focus public awareness on the policies being set there. March 22 is "World Water Day," and the festival will highlight that. We will produce video segments from the Forum for cable casting and playback at Water Water in New York. Possible distribution partners include Democracy Now! and Free Speech TV.
"As we enter into the new millennium," says Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President of the World Water Council, which organizes the water forums, "an estimated 26 countries with a population of more than 300 million people already suffer from water scarcity. Projections to the year 2050 show that 66 countries, comprising about two-thirds of the world population, will face moderate to severe water scarcity. The consequences of these water shortages on economic and social development, political stability and preservation of life are immeasurable."
A network of galleries, organizations, artists, and activists will collaborate to create the event. And we're looking for partners: please contact us if you'd like to explore how we can collaborate.
The event will be simultaneously satellite- and web-cast. Free Speech TV is a possible partner for satellite casting. Together with Downtown Community Television, they have outfitted a bus as a mobile TV studio, complete with telecommunications equipment for satellite linkage.
