Police Action against war protesters

My husband and i attended the War Protest yesterday and were shocked at the overkill by the mounted NYPD forces it was rather like the Coassacks attacking the marchers in Dr. Zhivago. We were on 2nd Ave. after the protest and watched in horror as about two dozen mounted police charged up 2nd ave to break up the protesters. They tried to force everyone onto the sidewalks and when we were standing there doing nothing suddenly about 5 mounted police came charging towards us on the sidewalk trying to arrest a protester. They paid no attention to the fact that in front of them were ordinary people men, women and children, some carried by their parents, and we had to run for our lives (i am 62 and have never experienced anyhthing like this here) up to then the protest was very peaceful and i am ashamed at the action of the NYPD , people were shouting Fascists, Nazis, and booing them, is this Freedom of Speech or are we in Nazi Germany again ? It was total overkill by the authorities, who had they issued a permit for a march, would not i think had any trouble with the marchers. Yours Wendy Webb

Protest Out Of Control
by Jim Bolan Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at 9:17 AM

Unfortunately I picked Feb 15 to take my family into NYC. We were appalled at the behavior of some of the protesters. Waving Iraqi flags and carrying posters of their hero Saddam Hussein, they clogged up dozens of streets making it almost impossible to travel by foot or car. Who the hell are you to disregard all public safety issues and disrupt the lives of thousands of people who were denied their constitutional right to walk freely in NYC. I was also angered by the constant chants filled with profanity in front of children and the provocation of the NYPD. I was amazed at their restraint and ability to control such a large unruly crowd. You were given a place to protest (near the UN). What right do you have to trample on my freedom in Times Square? Shame on you, you have hurt your cause but I hear Saddam was impressed.

New York
by Peter Stavis Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at 11:11 AM

I was in New York as well on the 15th. I wasn't involved in the protest but was at Times Square as protesters moved in. I didn't see any Iraqi flags but I was fortunate enough to be pepper sprayed in the face by a police officer who told me to "shut the f*** up" when I attempted to bring to his attention that I wasn't part of the protest and would simply like to be on my way. I was corralled in a pen with a group of 40 people, some protesters some not, all were arrested while on the sidewalk. If that's how to deal with it... then I disagree. This isn't to bash the police however, one officer was even nice enough to put a piece of gum in my mouth while I had handcuffs on, to help remove the pepper spray burn.

no place else to go
by matt Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 at 2:18 AM

the nypd would not allow most of the protesters to even attend the demonstration at 49th and first ave. the police set up barricades along 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to keep people OUT of the protest. having been denied entrance to their permitted protest grounds, the disenchanted protesters were forced to wander the city without any destination, filled with disgust over the nypd preventing most people from attending the protest and still bent on getting the word out concerning the unreasonable and illogical war on iraq.

Whats The Alternative
by Sam Kowolski Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 at 10:23 AM

What is the alternative to using force against this monster and sons who torture the children of his enemies, commit genocide against other ethnic groups, and commit unspeakable horror on political prisoners in Iraqi dungeons. More inspectors?? He has jerked off the world for 12 years by not allowing UN inspections free access in Iraq and continuing to amass and hide WMD while forcing world sanctions on his people causing an estimated $100-$200 Billion dollars in lost oil exports. Resolution 1441 must be enforced or the UN will lose all credibility.
Wait for the horror stories to come out of a free Iraq when he is disposed of. But the monday morning quarterbacking peaceniks will ignore it. Just like they did the genocide and murder of 2 million Cambodians after the US pulled out of South East Asia.
War should always be a last resort. He's had 12 years , enough already !
