this is for Rachel, 23, from Olympia, Washington D.C, U.S.A.
Rachel 23
perhaps it's the flavour of the ground
last spittle that you have swallowed
dipped in the broken pacifist gleam
under crawler tracks of rust and blood-
Rachel remains spread like fallen
asleep and tired of the tears
of landslides and outbreaks in Gaza
like a statue dedicated to the Ideas-
the breath and the sun have removed you
they have killed you with the smile
and now to the press, the tv
they'll say you have chosen your end-
Rachel dies for we all
not for Gaza not for Palestine
but for we servants of the same killers
we have rested in our parliaments-
American, little Rachel
eyes heart and body of woman
23 cycles of fury and heroism,
but which are your origins?
where is your tent of courage?
I wish to dream this night of you
I wish to withhold your name
to write it on every road of my mind
and then to rest beside you, Rachel
'cause now you get universal sense
now you lie in the memory of who hopes.
