why cover faces?
by joel Friday, Mar. 21, 2003 at 4:06 PM

Why do you people cover your faces? probably so when you start destroying things you won't be recognized. I was so happy people got arrested. The cops let you guys get away with too much.

Facial Coverings
by Aly Friday, Mar. 21, 2003 at 4:23 PM

Just to clairify something, many people wear facial coverings of some kind (bandanas, etc.) as minor protection against the lovely pepper spray some police officers have a tendency to get a little overzealous with. It only helps to a certain extent, but it does help. Just because someone is wearing some kind of partial facial covering does NOT necessarily mean that they are militant in any way.

masks
by Evan N Friday, Mar. 21, 2003 at 4:30 PM

1) because the police and/or feds videotape these marches and i'm not too keen on Poindexter having a video of me on file

2) because it is to symbolize solidarity with opressed peoples, like no matter who you are, with your face covered, you are just a human being.

3) as protection against pepper spray

and no one looted anything quit fabricating situations that never occured

Facial Coverings
by Kathleen Celestino Friday, Mar. 21, 2003 at 9:50 PM

FYI, I'm not really sure why people felt the need to cover their faces, I for one did not. However, it most certainly was not so that the police would not see our faces while we were causing havoc and breaking things and being beligerent. I don't personally believe that anyone who was arrested was arrested for any real reason, as no one was doing anything wrong. No one caused any damage, and any "riots" that broke out were probably a result of the police starting them.

Hmm?
by Greg Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 6:10 PM

What does Joel (a few posts up) think the police let protestors get away with? I was in the front of the unpermitted march when the cops started arresting us. I was in jail for 35 hours, and I really don't know what the hell it was I did to deserve being imprisoned. Last I checked its the job of the police to protect our right to peaceably assemble, not prevent us from doing so. If folks really don't want to see our message, they can turn away from our marches and cover their ears. I can see, though, how they may be spoiled in that respect, considering the media usually does that for them.

Why the mask?
by Tommy Mac Sunday, Mar. 23, 2003 at 2:54 PM

Why are you wearing a mask? Aren't you proud of what you are doing? Or is it that you are disturbing the "peace"? Criminals wear masks, my friend.

Why the mask?
by a man in black Sunday, Mar. 23, 2003 at 2:58 PM

For the same reason the police had their badge numbers covered and weren't wearing name tags.

You dont even know
by Wayne Sunday, Mar. 23, 2003 at 8:23 PM

Maybe some people did deserve getting arrested but the ratio between people that messed things up and people who didn't is overwhelmingly peaceful. As far as the mass arrests go. Why arrest 120 kids in a dark street in the downtown area. So the media doesn't catch you beating them as much. Since when cant your mind freely be spoken.

i saw this arrest
by james hesky Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2003 at 12:05 AM
strictflow2k@aol.com 412-606-1359

if this is the guy arrested on the southside, i saw his being arrested. he had been jawing a little with one of the cops, but not doing anything illegal, i believe saying that he was just "out for some exercise"
I then heard the cop say he was a smart ass and get another cop to pull him out of the crowd. as the picture shows, a number of cops roughed him up a bit while arresting him.
