Deja Vu: Vietnam?
"Operation Iraqi Freedom" looks more like Vietnam each day.
Bush and his puppeteers, the old guard Republican warlords, foolishly thought the Iraqi people would welcome them and the soldiers would surrender--similar to the prevailing concept that the South Vietnamese would welcome U. S. involvement.
The U.S. was unprepared for the military tactics of the Viet Cong (who might very well have derived them from American Revolutionaries fighting the hide-bound British soldiers); the Iraqi military tactics have surprised and confounded the U. S. (Although obfuscated by the Bush ridiculously transparent spin machine, numerous hints suggest that the U. S. tactics represent a civilian plan not approved by our military.)
The U.S. military was constantly confused by Charlie in Nam, particularly in simply identifying the enemy, who frequently posed as South Vietnamese citizens and disrupted, among other things, supply lines. According to a military talking head on C-Span recently, the maximum supply line length should be 30 miles. The old men in D.C. sending kids to war (as usual) have been irritated by Iraqi irregulars posing as citizens and attacking the 300 mile supply line resulting from the rush to get to Baghdad, which has left enemies behind our front lines. C-Span reported yesterday (March 29) that soldiers at the front had been reduced to one meal per day as a result of the vulnerability of the supply line.
And, of course, the U.S. has once more been staggered by the fierceness and resilience of the enemy, this time the Iraqi fighters, both regulars and irregulars. The elite Iraqi troops haven't even been encountered yet! The Bushies, blinded by their own self-righteous hubris, expected the Iraqi soldiers to lay down their arms and even participate in the removal of Saddam Hussein.
