the supposed link is NOT between the iraqi government or the majority of its citizens, but a small faction of people. we groups like that here in the US.
Who's responsible for al-Qaida now?

Ansar al-Islam was based in northern Iraq, which is controlled by two rival Kurdish parties, the PUK and KDP, under the protection of the US "no-fly zone." The US likes to tout the supposed prosperity of the north vis-a-vis the rest of Iraq as proof of its own beneficence. (And in fact, the north has received a disproportionate share of the revenues from the UN oil-for-food program over the past decade, so that the US can lie and claim that the suffering of Iraqis could be blamed solely on Saddam Hussein and not the murderous sanctions.)
So in other words, this small Islamist militia -- if it really DOES have links to al-Qaida -- has been operating in an area controlled not by Saddam Hussein but by PRO-US forces. (Although I should use the term "pro-US" only with the caveat that the US is decidedly not pro-Kurd. If the Turkish army ends up invading Iraqi Kurdistan after all -- just as Turkish air forces have been allowed by Britain and the US to periodically violate the so-called "no fly zone" over the past ten years in order to slaughter Kurdish rebels fleeing Turkish Kurdistan -- we will see who the US ends up choosing.)
In short, then, anyone who believes that Ansar al-Islam is proof of Saddam's link to al-Qaida is a blubbering idiot.
