The Secret Service Should be contacting you shortly !!!
by 2 beers Saturday July 26, 2003 at 11:03 PM

IMC what happened to you policy against statements of personal threats against anyone? More evidence of how hypocritical the editorsare and how arbitrary the IMC editorial policy is.

But worse yet, this picture showing violence against the President of the United States (in addition to being offensive) clearly condones violence against the sitting President of the Untied States. And the statemensts of Mary I. Hart of the editorial board that -- "The editorial policies include the following as a reason for hiding:
'contain information that is not true and could cause confusion about an event in the future'. The first part of the quote is true- the content is bogus-although the second part of the quote is not" clearly expresses some hope for the outcome illustrated in the offensive picture.

As the publisher of this material I believe that IMC may face some liability for this. And I suspect the Secret Service will want the logs of the posters that put this up (even though you say you dont keep such logs we all know that you have.)

DEAR FBI -- Please note that the IMC boards are a buzz with words of protest adn rebellion directed at the President and IMC is actively working to organize protests at the President's speech here on Monday.

Yes, I can only hope that Ewan Kenkesmearse works for the Secret Service or FBI.

gotta correct "Two Beers" here

Nope, I have not expressed hope that violence will be done to the president. If you want to get started on legal stuff, you might want to check out the ramifications of misrepresenting my views in a public forum. At the very least, re-read the discussion so that you understand what is actually being said.

For the record, I am against *all* violence. The conversation which "Two Beers" is referring to comes from the editorial discussion list, which is archived and available for everyone to read. Readers of the archive will note that
1. I agreed with getting rid of the offensive picture
2. I discussed the ramifications of doing so in light of IndyMedia's editorial policies, which discourage censorship. There has been a lot of discussion over IndyMedia's alleged censorship, when in fact posts are hidden only when some stringent criteria are met, and after discussion with the entire editorial group. So "Two Beers" is hassling me for engaging in a discussion over whether it is appropriate to engage in censorship of some extremely tasteless material.

BTW, issues like this get debated regularly (in the State Supreme Court a few months back), and usually are not settled by the Secret Service.

If you have some issues with me personally, "Two Beers", feel free to address your concerns to me directly at the email address above or in person.

WOW !!!

Mary,

I think that your skills as an attorney are questionable, but that is a debate for another day. The Secret Service takes any threat to the President very seriously. Just last week a political cartoonist was detained and questioned by the SS for a cartoon depicting an assault on the President as a metaphor for the President's political trials and tribulations. I don't remember who the cartoonist was or the paper that published his work, but I think that NPR did a story on it. IMC should be very careful with things like this. Especially since IMC is an active organizer of protests against the President and his administration.

attorney?

Well, I don't claim to be an attorney- that isn't what I do professionally. I do claim to be a citizen though, and as such, I am aghast at the "you'd better be careful what you write" advice. That's not the vision of America that I have, and would seem to run counter to the principles upon which the country was founded.

so, would that be ..
by 2 beers Sunday July 27, 2003 at 09:31 PM

thelaws that keep you from misrepresenting what President Bush says??? Mary, you are not the sharpest tack in the corkboard, now are you (but you have probably heard that before). You people misrepresent everything that anyone on the right or in the middle says and then it is a crime for someone to post your statements verbatim. George Bush did not lie when he made his statement about the British having reports that Saddam was trying to obtain yellowcake from a French company in Niger. The British Government stands behind the veracity of their report. The CIA and the other US intelligence agencies do not refute that statement, they only say that US sources have not fully vetted that same intelligence. But you fools misrepresent the President's statement with joy.

And since when did IMC editors get so touchy and concerned about the laws of libel??? Sure wasn't your concern at all when the Rich Makin thing was going on. IMC was libeling like there was no tomorrow. I guess it is just another of the many examples of the hypocracy of IMC editors.

The FBI is serious about this stuff
by secretagentgirl Monday July 28, 2003 at 08:31 AM

A firend of mine at UB got questioned by the FBI over some drawings and a blog that he did which compared President Bush to Hitler & Mussolini. They even asked him about his friends, including me because I was involved with some of the organizing groups. I don't know what law gives them the right to do that, but I really wouldn't care to test it. Now there are undercover agents at every opening and show that he is part of. Besides, the picture is revolting. I don't want to see anything like this. I don't think that IMC should be promoting violence like this. Would it be different if someone posted a picture with the same captions but showing Mayor Murphy, Kweisi Mfume, Jesse Jackson or Tim Vining? Don't set a bad example that will allow all of the freepers and trolls to start another tyrade about IMC's editorial double standards.

Self Revealed as Our Enemy
by Prodigal Yunzer Wednesday July 30, 2003 at 11:15 AM

Your contempt for our President, who happened to be in office when we were attacked by a terror army which operates under many flags in many nations, is demonstrated by the ugly pornography you post here.
My only wish for you coddled college leftist bitches is that we could somehow transport you to Uday's rape room, Castro's HIV positive gulags, or Pol Pot's reeducation camps so you could personally experience the glories of the political philosphies you edify.

When is it OK to be a traitor?
by Jeffrey formerly of Pgh Thursday November 20, 2003 at 01:35 PM

Why do you think that such hateful images are ok?
Have you no value systems?

This is the problem with Anarchy.

Everything becomes legal, because nothing is illegal.
Everything becomes right, because nothing is wrong.
Everyone can be a traitor, because they have no nation.

It is only because you live in a free country that you can do such things. But when do civil liberties allow threats of violence and murder? In every other society in history, that is a CRIME, and it should be here too.
