Boycott CBS!
by Tony F. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003 at 2:34 PM

The pledge: Boycott the Reagan Smear, and boycott Reagan Smear advertisers for 30 days after the show.

There is only one way to put the Hollywood Left in their place--cost them money.

By taking the four simple steps outlined below, you will help ensure that no one in Hollywood or at the TV networks ever so blatantly tries to smear conservatives again.

The pledge: Boycott the Reagan Smear, and boycott Reagan Smear advertisers for 30 days after the show.

Drudge has the scoop on CBS
http://www.drudgereport.com/rr4.htm
http://www.drudgereport.com/rr5.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------------
List of Sponsors of hate coming soon
http://www.boycottcbs.com/sponsors.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Most boycotts fail because they overreach. This one will succeed because the premise is simple: if CBS and those companies that advertise on CBS's hateful, dishonest, anti-Reagan TV series LOSE MONEY because of it, they will think long and hard before they launch their next smear on patriotic Americans.
By following these four simple steps, you can make history, and Tear Down the Wall of Left-wing hate speech.

STEP ONE

Join the battle by signing up for our email alert that will tell you which companies advertise on the CBS series. Shortly after the anti-Reagan smear on conservatives airs, we will send you an email alert with the names and contact information for the companies that funded this Left-wing attack. The email will tell you everything you need to know to send emails, faxes, or place phone calls to these companies to inform them you will not purchase their products for 30 days to protest their complicity in smearing patriotic Americans.

By signing up on our list, you also allow us to report to advertisers, IN ADVANCE of the show, how many fed-up Americans will punish them at the check-out counter for supporting this trash TV.

***Simply send an email to Reagan@boycottCBS.com, and you'll be standing up to Barbra Streisand, her cronies at CBS, and those companies that are financing this garbage.***

Best of all, signing up does not create some life-long commitment. This project will end after the show airs, and all email addresses will be destroyed. In fact, throughout the campaign, you will receive a maximum of three emails (up to two emails before the show airs, and one email after the show). Too many campaigns are really Trojan Horse efforts to build mailing lists. This is instead a single-minded effort to teach the Hollywood Left a lesson.

STEP TWO

Email your friends, and urge them to join our campaign. This is entirely a grass-roots effort; there is no fancy budget behind it. The power of email and the Web is all we have, and all we need, to humble Hateful Hollywood.

Send an email to every sensible, fair-minded American you know asking them to visit this website or to join us via email at Reagan@boycottCBS.com to support this campaign. Here is a draft email you can use to alert your friends to this campaign.

STEP THREE

Watch one of the other TV networks during the Reagan Smear mini-series. This series is scheduled to air during the all-important time in television known as Sweeps Weeks. The money CBS makes on all its advertising, for all its shows, for the next six months will largely be determined by how many viewers they get during Sweeps Weeks. By watching a CBS competitor during their Smear Series, you multiply your power, as the other networks will look more attractive to advertisers than CBS. Of course, remember to remind your friends to do the same.

Also, if you happen to know anyone who keeps track of the TV shows they watch for Neilson ratings or other TV rating systems, ASK THEM NOT TO WATCH THE ANTI-REAGAN SMEAR. These "special" TV viewers control tens of millions of dollars based on what shows they watch. If you convince a single Neilson Family to watch something other than the Reagan Smear, you literally have cost CBS millions of dollars. Not bad for placing a phone call to a friend.

STEP FOUR

After the show, use the final email we will ever send you to remind advertisers that they will pay a price for sticking their finger in your eye and purposefully funding an attack on your beliefs. It will take less than 10 minutes, but will send a signal heard 'round the world.

THAT'S IT!

The easiest boycott ever. It even allows you to keep watching Everyone Loves Raymond. Simply put, if the ratings for the Reagan Smear fall short, costing CBS tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue due to its key Sweeps Weeks time segment, EVERY NETWORK will think twice next time before signing up liberals like Barbra Streisand's husband to attack a great American family who restored our nation after the sorry malaise of the Jimmy Carter years.

It's hard to understand the partisan cruelty that must drive CBS executives to smear Nancy Reagan and former President Ronald Reagan as she copes every day with his devastating Alzheimer's disease. Don't let them make a buck with their lies. Email Reagan@boycottCBS.com today, and please urge your friends to do the same.

by Nixon baby Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at 11:04 AM

Considering that Reagan was the worst American president until Bush, they really didn't need to resort to lies.
Iran-Contra, Rex 84, and voodoo economics (low taxes-high spending) should have been enough.

What's wrong with low taxes?
by fred Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at 11:44 AM

I'm tired of paying taxes. Who cares about a deficit anway? What is the big deal? Inflation is still in check with the balloning of the deficit. If you imagine gonvernment as a household, you would realize that sometime you have to take on debt and in time you pay it off.

I think the problem is that the poor don't pay enough taxes. They get the services and benefit so they should start to pay.

My mother died this past February after suffering ten years with Alzhiermer's. This once articulate woman worked in Washington for the government for 27 years and loved the Reagans. You should have seen the way her eyes would light up when he would speak. I know what Nancy is living for my wife, three sons and I cared for my mom during her decline. I am at a loss trying to understand how CBS could do something so cruel. I am sure that mom has turned over in her grave as I write this. Never mind the boycott, I could never again watch CBS with a clear conscience.

and it didn't make him any less the wonderful man he was. Reagan's Alzheimer's doesn't make him any less the gun-running patsy he was. The men BEHIND Reagan way back then are back in power, with the emphasis on power, behind Bush right here, right now. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, Rove, Powell, ad nauseum.

I would never have believed that so many of my fellow citizens are sheeple. We are being led to our own slaughter by the men in power, BY OUR OWN.

WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

These men have clearly laid out their plans to run the world like a business on their own website, which you can find by typing "Project for a New American Century" into your browser.

Ms. Streisand That Lefty
by Carol Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 10:58 AM

The only reason Ms. Streisand needs to air this kind of trash about the best president that we have ever had is because she knows that we conservatives stand for truth, honesty and integrity. The only way she can try to discredit conservatives and Ronald Reagan is to create lies about him. Frankly I am sick of her and if she does not like it here she can leave. I mean, America is a free place. Let her go to another country, take Iraq for example, and try to have the freedoms she has here. She should be on her knees thanking God every night that she was born in America and she has the freedom she has. She is a perfect example of the American dream because she came from nothing and has everything. Unfortunately she is trying to use her "so called voice" as a Hollywood Liberal to destroy everything that she is a perfect example of - THE AMERICAN DREAM!!!! Babs, do something good with your millions. Help feed some hungry children for a change. I think you would feel much more rewarded for doing that instead of bashing a defenseless HERO!

Ah, Real Protest. Real Results
by 2Beers Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 11:01 AM

This is the way to do it. I might watch the Reagan movie just to find out who the sponsors are. And then I am done with them. This movie is clearly just intended to malign President Reagan because the Left loves to hate the man, even though he was far more accomplished than any President the Dems have had in the last 50 years. JFK gave us Vietnam. Johnson escalated Vietnam. Carter screwed up foreign affairs for the last quarter century.

It took Nixon to get us out of Vietnam. Reagan to rescue the Country from the impending Carter recession (remember 18% mortgage rates??) and regain American respect in foreign affairs.

CBS is a desperate media outlet, lashing out for atention. Cable is eating its market. The Hollywood types are aghast that America now has so many media choices and is no longer beholden to the political leanings of the "major" networks.

BRING ON THE BOYCOTT !!!!!!!!!

Day Reagan was shot
by real story Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 11:02 AM

The real story should be the day John Hinkley attempted to kill Reagan.

The story should be the connection between the Hinkley's and the Bushies. The scheduled dinner between Scott Hinkley and Neil Bush the day after Reagan was shot. The oil partnerships between the Bushies and Hinkley's, the campaign contributions made by the Hinkley family to Bush Sr. This should be the story CBS should air. They say Reagan was never quite the same after the assasination attempt. And gee - who took over?

Why did Reagan end up at the hospital well after Brady?

These and many more questions should be asked, but as we well know CBS is owned by VIACOM, which should tell us who controls the news.

Its a well known fact that the Bush cartel had Reagan taken out - it just took longer than they thought.

The solution is you should take your television and chuck it out the window. The call it the idiot box for a reason.

They're far more important reasons to Boycott CBS other than they might smear the Gipper.

In Answer to "real story"
by 2Beers Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 12:17 PM

real story, all of that Hinckley/Bush Grassy Knoll conspiracy stuff is just stupid (I was going to say wierd, but I think stupid is more appropriate).

As for Brady ending up at the hospital first -- well they clearly knew Brady had been shot. He had blood all over him. Know one even realized that the Gipper had been shot (including Ron, who insisted he was fine and was more concerned about Brady and his body guards). Brady was immediately taken to the nearest hospital. The President, as is SOP in these situations, was taken back to the White House (since they had thought that he had not been hit). I think that they were practically in the White House gates when someone in the car with Ron convinced him that he had in fact been shot and needed to go to the hospital. Ron insisted on going to Walter Reed Bethesda (rather than to the nearest hospital which would have had to have been locked down under tight security) so as not to create the impression that his injuries were life threatening. I think that Hinckley may have actually gotten to the hospital before Ron.

This ain't Jack Ruby, Lee Harvey O, and JFk we are talking about.

by back at the White House Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 1:29 PM

Meanwhile back at the White House the Bush Cartel made the announcement that Reagan had been killed and Bush Sr. was now the president. That little fucker actually took over for a bit, until it was brought to the administrations attention that the Gipper was still alive. Then it's kind of funny when Brady was shot with a .38 and the Gipper was grazed with a .22 and of course there were the findings of that mystery solution which caused Reagan's lung to collapse and some would even go as far to say had a hand in his current illness.

But, Meredith
by Cleetus Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 6:47 PM

Given his gutting of Vet's benefits, mental health, and other social services during his dreadful reign, not to mention his lack of memory regarding many of the crimes commited during his rule, I find it a delicious irony that he'd be a blank vegetable on the public dole.
It's a pretty unoriginal idea, stolen from the authoritarian left and the Leninist mummy cult. Not to be outdone, the neo-facists have to have their mummy, too, but at least the revolution-killing Bolsheviks were merciful enough to let theirs die first.
But, seriously, tax dollars that could help someone worthwhile are being wasted to keep that paperweight/doorstop drooling, not mention the 23 years of Secret Service protection. He should be wheeled into any alley with the mentally disabled folks who were put on the streets by him and his criminal gang.

We have recieved no mercy from his ilk, so they should expect none from us. That's why it's called class war, honey. The ruling clases drink your blood 24 hours a day, every day, yet you grovel and lick their wrinkled feet. Posting my opinion here is neither revolutionary, nor cruel, as you put. It does change a damn thing either way. Replying to trolls is one of the lowest forms of masturbation and it doesn't affect Reagan much either.
For three years we cared for my great aunt ,who succumbed to Alhzheimer's disease 17 years ago. Ihave never felt so helpless in all my life. I can empathize and deeply regret my insensitivity, I harbor no ill will towards you and your loved ones, but I have an abundance of it for men such as Reagan.

Little Bush will make for an interesting elder statesman (although he'll probably have trouble landing the high price speaking gigs), especially if you've ever seen CAT scans of former heavy cocaine abusers. He's already seems to suffer from some kind of dementia.

This Reagan bashing campaign by CBS is not a left-right political issue. Nor is it a platform for the misinformed to berate the current president. Reagan was the best president in my lifeftime, a great man with a terrific wife. Nobody regardless of age, race, physical condition should not be subjected to a B.S. mis-portrayal of their lives in an effort to raise Neilson's.

Some of the commentary I ' ve read is a prime example of what happens when a liberal kids (young and not so young )get a hold of keyboard.Reguritated revisionist history or loony conspiracy theory bilge. "BIG OIL!!!", "Bushies", blah, blah, blah. Many of us were around for the Carter years, he may be a nice guy but was a dismal failure as a President. High inflation at home and defeat and humilliation abroad. LOOK IT UP! Don't take the T.A.'s opinion as the gospel truth.Stand up and dare to question your professors. Get out of the ivory tower for a while. The world is a profoundly better place for Regan having been elected then re-elected in landslides. Ask a communist (start with the political science dept.!) what they think. Have an original thought for a change!

Don't adulterate history
by Emily Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 10:54 PM

During the "Regan Years" I was a Democrat. I thought with my heart and not my head. Now that I have educated myself in finance, business and economics, I can only say good things about the Regan years. I am a proud Republican. Whatever your political party, it is simply wrong to depict a former head of the United States with gross negativity and more importantly slanderous lies. Artistic freedom should not be abused and when it is malicious and degredating we should question the ethics of those involved. History is something to be learned from - not adulterated. Present a fair depiction - or don't present anything at all. CBS and all its affiliates and sponsors are fully aware that their presentation will affect the opinion of many thousands of uninformed and uneducated viewers. Tragically, the media moguls know their power and will wield it to their whims - even if those whims are politically based and missinformative to the general public.

Be Thankful for Regan
by Keith Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at 11:00 PM

The Communist B.S. (CBS) is spewing falacies about the greatest president in my lifetime. Just today, we got the news that the GDP is the highest it has been since... the early 80's... but we still are hearing how bad the economy is because of the media's tilt to one political agenda.
For all of you that think he wasn't a good president, can you even begin to imagine if we had to fight the Soviet threat of a true global nuclear war along with terrorism of today?
I mean, how would have the timid President Carter have handled the Soviet threat? Not well. Come on, at least give President Regan the credit he deserves in taking out a threat to us all. "Tear down this wall" and step out of your political ties and realize how lucky we were to have him as a president during those times. I really feel lucky and if you don't, just ask yourself who you would have liked to see in the Presidency at that time and would that person have made the right decision and stood up to the USSR the way President Regan did.

The Heartland

Thank you Mr. Reagan for your contributions to our country. I am 46 years old. In my lifetime no president has had a more profound effect on our country or on the future of this country. You made us feel good about ourselves and caused us to realize that we live in the greatest country on earth. Your leagacy will be that of a great American Patriot.
My Understanding is that CBS is planning a mini-series that is intended to show a negative view of the Reagans. This is niether shocking nor is it impactful. Ronald Reagan's positive impact on the future of this country will never be removed or forgotten.
Mr. Reagan, Thank you!

There are men who would control the whole world, in their own words...

Project for the New American Century, statement of principles, BY THE AUTHORS

BraveNewWorldOrderFighter@yahoo.com

"for Pittsburgh Indymedia because I'm from Pittsburgh" They're all back in power: Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and cohorts. How willing will they be to relinquish their power this time around?

http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm

June 3, 1997

American foreign and defense policy is adrift. Conservatives have criticized the incoherent policies of the Clinton Administration. They have also resisted isolationist impulses from within their own ranks. But conservatives have not confidently advanced a strategic vision of America's role in the world. They have not set forth guiding principles for American foreign policy. They have allowed differences over tactics to obscure potential agreement on strategic objectives. And they have not fought for a defense budget that would maintain American security and advance American interests in the new century.

We aim to change this. We aim to make the case and rally support for American global leadership.

As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world's preeminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?

We are in danger of squandering the opportunity and failing the challenge. We are living off the capital -- both the military investments and the foreign policy achievements -- built up by past administrations. Cuts in foreign affairs and defense spending, inattention to the tools of statecraft, and inconstant leadership are making it increasingly difficult to sustain American influence around the world. And the promise of short-term commercial benefits threatens to override strategic considerations. As a consequence, we are jeopardizing the nation's ability to meet present threats and to deal with potentially greater challenges that lie ahead.

We seem to have forgotten the essential elements of the Reagan Administration's success: a military that is strong and ready to meet both present and future challenges; a foreign policy that boldly and purposefully promotes American principles abroad; and national leadership that accepts the United States' global responsibilities.

Of course, the United States must be prudent in how it exercises its power. But we cannot safely avoid the responsibilities of global leadership or the costs that are associated with its exercise. America has a vital role in maintaining peace and security in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. If we shirk our responsibilities, we invite challenges to our fundamental interests. The history of the 20th century should have taught us that it is important to shape circumstances before crises emerge, and to meet threats before they become dire. The history of this century should have taught us to embrace the cause of American leadership.

Our aim is to remind Americans of these lessons and to draw their consequences for today. Here are four consequences:

• we need to increase defense spending significantly if we are to carry out our global
responsibilities today and modernize our armed forces for the future;

• we need to strengthen our ties to democratic allies and to challenge regimes hostile to our interests and values;

• we need to promote the cause of political and economic freedom abroad;

• we need to accept responsibility for America's unique role in preserving and extending an international order friendly to our security, our prosperity, and our principles.

Such a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity may not be fashionable today. But it is necessary if the United States is to build on the successes of this past century and to ensure our security and our greatness in the next.

Spending not Reagan led to deficits
by john Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at 6:59 AM

It is a fact that revenue to the treasury doubled in the 80's even with the tax cuts. Spending was out of control during this time which lead to deficits. Remember who was in control of the house back then? I'll take any tax cut I can get. It is not our fault the government cannot be more responsible with our money.

While having worked for numerous people in politics in my life, NONE, and I do mean NONE, hold a candle to THE President and Mrs. Reagan. They are who you see. God bless Nancy for everything she is having to handle, alone. As for CBS and its cronies in New York and LA, a 30 day boycott is not near enough for what they are doing. NEVER again will I watch CBS for anything, and I look forward to the boycott list so I can spread the names of those who would attempt to destroy the greatest President this country has ever had. I have not watched CBS/Communist Broadcast System or any of the big three since the 1970s, by then I'd had enough brainwashing and decided to look elsewhere for sources of news.

I'm glad cable came along, especially the FOX news channel. I can now watch national events and presidential speeches without the newscasters or commentators giving me their slanted viewpoint.

Open Eyes and Ears
by Michael Trent Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at 3:16 PM

It has never ceased to amaze me that probably 95 % of the citizens in the United States have been, are, and will probably always be completely unaware that ALL of the political office holders, from the president down, or from your local mayors up, are only puppets. The remaining 5% ARE the elected office holders. They are the ones that have their striings manipulated by BIG BUSSINESS and WALL STREEET. THINK ABOUT IT. What does a moving picture actor know about running a country ? What does a peanut farmer know about running a country ? What does a haberdasher, a soldier, a baseball team owning oil magnate or a privileged son of a wealthy dynasty know about running a country ? WAKE UP PEOPLE. Don't idolize or trash elected office holders. They are only figureheads. If the right strings are pulled they become heroes. If the wrong strings are pulled, what's left ? The one thing that they all have in common, right, left, middle or sideways, is that none of them ever have a hard time paying an electric bill. And none of them belong to the PTA for the needs of their kids. None of them have to adhere to a family household budget. None of them are concerned about the cost of filling the car's gas tank. The millions that are spent to get elected or reelected rarely include a dollar out of their pocket. The people that will own them and pull their strings come up with that money. Of course, once in a while a maverick gets the top job. Has anyone noticed a difference in philosophy, attitude and behavior between the Bush father and son. The father has compassion for the fish that he hooks during his fishing tournaments. The maverick son could not be corralled and prevented from forcing an unprecedented and unprovoked military invasion and destruction of another sovern country on the other side of the world. Or perhaps that action was not a tantrum satisfaction, but to the finantial advantage of one or more of the string pullers. So, take it easy people. Don't exalt or trash the office holders that some of you think thay YOU have put into office. The "hero" presidents and the "loser" presidents are only the products of the string pullers. And if you were one of the string pullers you wouldn't be at this site right now. I am not in fovor of putting the bad mouth on anyone, right, left or in the middle. And neither am I looking for a stone to cast on any political nest. Just remember, when you start putting the bad mouth on "the Hollywood Liberals", where did Ronnie come from ? Do you want more Ronnies from LaLa Land or are you sure that the ivy tower crowd from Yale and Princeton would be better ? But please don't forget that what ever you get will be either the same or a new set of puppets.

Lies about WMD intelligence? Lies about who made the "victory" banner? Lies about ties to al Qaeda? Lies about cocaine and DUI's? Lies about 9/11? Lies about Enron?

As can be predicted it can be left to an intellectually dishonest Democrat to try and conjure up some image of lying like the great liar himself Bill Clinton. Address each of the absurb questions above and they hold no water per your earlier comments.

1)WMD are known to exist - if you tell a drug dealer you're coming to get their stash are they going to simply put it out on the coffee table for ya??? 2)Is it really important who made the "Victory Banner"? I guess it is to those who have no ideas and, therefore, no relevance. 3)If you think Saddam has no ties to al-Quaeda you've been smoking one too many doobies with Moores. Saddam had a series of "Open Letters to the American People" in the ensuing days after 9-11. I read them myself straight out of the Baghdad newspaper. 4)At least Bush can say he hasn't done cocaine on the roof of the White House. How many Clinton staffers couldn't ever gain security clearance because of their drug records??? 5) I'll bet you can't name one substanitated claim about how Bush was involved with 9-11. Pure rubbish. 6)Your beloved Clinton had more ties to Enron than Bush. The Dems garnered a bucket full of contributions from this company.

Now, please try to be more intellectually honest when discussing issues, or just stop commenting on things you know absolutely nothing about!!!

Freedom of Speech: Fact vs. Fiction
by Woodman Tuesday, Nov. 04, 2003 at 1:26 PM

It is one thing to dramatize an actual person. Authors must create dialog. But, that dialog must be in the "spirit" of that person. For example, we don't really know what Jesus said, but can be pretty sure he never said, "Dude, where's my mule?"

By the same token, some of Reagan's dialog may need to be created for this story, but hate speech was never in his character. Let's face it: this story has been spun so far to the Left that CBS labeled it as a "love story" rather than a biography.

CBS knew where this story was going, which is why they solicited input from Michael Reagan and others (though only allowing them to view an 8 minute clip). This isn't even muck raking, it's simply bunk. Typical Left stuff: intermix truth with lies, call it "truth", and dupe the masses yet again. Spin, spin, spin.

I wish my TV still had a channel dial. I'd spin it away from CBS.

I am really tired of all the garbage on TV and as a result, we look at very little any more. Reagan was right!

Ottawa Coniferous forests around the world may be emitting more smog-causing nitrogen oxides than traffic and industry combined, suggests a report in the prestigious journal Nature.

The report, released Wednesday, flies in the face of the accepted view that forests reduce pollution by absorbing it a theory Canada relied on in demanding credit for forests as pollution "sinks" under the Kyoto climate change accord.

But environmentalists aren't about to blacklist Scotch pine trees. They note that forest emissions are part of a natural balance that has existed since pre-industrial times and say man-made emissions are behind most pollution and global warming.

Scotch pine needles release nitrogen oxides directly into the atmosphere when exposed to ultraviolet light, says a study led by Perrti Hari of the University of Helsinki.

Nitrogen oxides are smog precursors: They combine with other pollutants to form ground-level ozone, a major component of smog.

The emissions from Scotch pines increase in proportion to the amount of ultraviolet radiation they receive, says the study.

"Although this contribution is insignificant on a local scale, our findings suggest that global NOx emissions from boreal coniferous forests may be comparable to those produced by worldwide industrial and traffic sources," says the report.

Former U.S. president Ronald Reagan caused an uproar in 1980 when he said trees cause just as much pollution as cars.

Quentin Chiotti, a scientist with Toronto-based Pollution Probe, acknowledged that forests contribute a variety of chemicals to the atmosphere, but was surprised at the comparison with traffic and industry.

"If I walk through a forest am I going to be at risk for my cardiac and respiratory health? Unless it's a very unusual forest ... I can't imagine our health being at risk."

Even though the emissions may seem large when calculated for the globe they have no local health effects because they are diluted in the global atmosphere, he said.

Henry Hengeveld, a scientist with Environment Canada, said emissions from vegetation are part of a balance that doesn't change much over time.

"They should be pretty steady at a pre-industrial level," he said.

What matters for human health is the increments to that background level, he said.

Kevin Percy of the Canadian Forest Service in Fredericton said he has problems with the suggestion that emissions from coniferous trees could exceed those from traffic and industry.

"From my perspective, that would be pure conjecture at this point."

Trees cause pollution after all Reagan vindicated January 11, 2001
When Ronald Reagan said trees caused pollution, most people thought he was up a gum tree. Australian researchers have now discovered that, in the case of eucalypts at least, the President was right after all.
Australia's native plants emit chemical compounds that can interact with other air pollutants to exacerbate smog in cities. Scientists from CSIRO Energy Technology and Atmospheric Research have been commissioned by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to investigate emissions of organic compounds from Australian eucalypt trees and grasses that contribute to the formation of photochemical smog.

"It's not just cars and industry that cause air pollution," says Mr Ian Galbally, from CSIRO Atmospheric Research. "Plants release highly reactive hydrocarbons that can add significantly to photochemical smog problems. That is, smog caused by the reaction of sunlight with chemical compounds like those from industry, car exhausts and now, as we've discovered, plants," he says.

"The blue haze you often see over the Dandenongs in Victoria and in the Blue Mountains near Sydney is caused in part by the gases released by vegetation. We found that grasses, particularly when cut, are potent emitters of reactive hydrocarbons."

"Plants release these compounds into the atmosphere in large quantities. These volatile compounds add to the photochemical smog in the same way as emissions from human sources there is no discrimination," says Dr Peter Nelson, senior research scientist with CSIRO Energy Technology.

"We are measuring the emissions rates of hydrocarbons from three Australian eucalypt species, using large branches of mature trees," says Dr Nelson.

"One of the things we have found already is a close relationship between the amount of the sun's radiation, of the type that is important for photosynthesis and the plant's growth, and the level of hydrocarbons they emit. Emission rates are highest during the day and drop off towards evening.

"We can use this information to assist the EPA to more accurately estimate chemical emissions from Australian trees and grasses," he says.

So there you have it trees really do cause pollution. Which leads Media Monitor to wonder what other Reaganite unwisdoms might eventually prove to have been prophetic. Maybe the Star Wars programme was a good idea after all. And - more frightening still will the vindicating effect of history ever apply to Dan Quayle?

It was he, indeed, who told the world "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."

Quayle's other geoscientific pronouncement was about Mars, and if vindicated, would offer hope to the terraformers among us, and fans of the new film, Red Planet. Mr Potatoe Head said, on the 8 November 1989:

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."

Hmm. Better hope there aren't too many impurities in it, then...

I find it highly ironic that someone that supports people like GW Bush would use elitist in a derogatory manner. You can't get more elite than Bush has been throughout his life. A Student of both Harvard and Yale. A member of the Skull and Bones Society while at Yale. A man that used money from his father and rich friends to set up oil businesses (which flopped). Bought a baseball team with partners(when he ran into the ground). None of that worked for him so he moved to politics where he's been ever since. Plus he's an admitted coke addict (the drug of choice for the wealthy). George W. Bush hasn't worked a real job all his life. Now please tell me just how much do you think a man who's had a life of privilege is going to be able to connect with the common man?

Amazon Forest May Be Adding To Greenhouse Gases Tuesday, December 2, 2003
Parts of the Brazilian Amazon forest might be emitting more carbon dioxide than is absorbed, Brazilian and U.S. scientists said in a study published Friday in the magazine Science, adding that previous studies on the issue probably overstated the amount of the gas absorbed by the forest.

During a three-year inquiry, researchers from Universidade de Sao Paulo, the National Institute of Space Research and Harvard University measured levels of emission and absorption of the gas in the National Forest of Tapajos, in Para, nothern Brazil.

The scientists found that carbon dioxide emissions actually increased during rainy seasons, when decomposing foliage, set off by a high degree of humidity, released their carbon-rich emissions into the air. Scientists had previously believed that emissions only increased during dry seasons (Reinaldo Jose Lopes, Folha de Sao Paulo, Nov. 28, U.N. Wire translation).

One of the main proposals of the Kyoto Protocol, which targets a decrease of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, is to slow deforestation and increase incentives for planting new forests. According to BBC Brasil, the result of the latest study supports previous statements from some environmentalists that politicians developed the protocol based on the now dubious role forests play in cutting gas emissions (BBC Brasil, Nov. 28, U.N. Wire translation).
