Tear Down This Wall!

It was less than 20 years ago that President Ronald Reagan’s infamous words rang out – “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” When the Berlin Wall fell the WORLD celebrated and freedom triumphed. Today a new wall is being built in Israel. The Wall is a barrier and not a step towards peace. The World must find the moral fortitude to give the victims a voice and demand that construction of this barrier cease. Israelis and Palestinians face the same tough challenges that the East and West faced, surmounted, and overcame..

On Friday July 30th at the University of Pittsburgh William Pitt Union, scientist and Stop the Wall activist John Reese will present his first hand account of the impact of the Wall (http://www.stopthewall.com ). Join us for this very important political and educational event that will explore the effects of the Wall on the people, the environment and the economy. Mr. Reese will also address the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice and comments by international bodies such as the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel's West Bank barrier is illegal and construction of it should be stopped immediately. The ruling said the barrier's construction was "tantamount to annexation" and impeded the Palestinian right to self-determination. Israel insists the barrier is needed to keep out West Bank militants and suicide bombers. However, as detailed by materials presented before the court, the Wall claims an additional 3% of Palestinian land, severs villages, and severely impacts the economy and environment. The advisory ruling will serve as a basis for future UN action.
BBC News detailed the International Court of Justice ruling as follows:
• The construction and its associated regime was contrary to international law;
• Israel is under obligation to cease construction and dismantle the wall;
• Israel should compensate owners of land seized to construct the barrier and those harmed by the barrier;
• All states are under obligation not to recognize the situation and ensure Israel's compliance with international law;
• The UN should consider what further action to take.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has condemned Israel's construction of a West Bank barrier as "contrary" to international law. The International Committee of the Red Cross, a neutral, Swiss-based organization, says that, where the barrier runs through occupied territory, thousands of Palestinians have been deprived of access to water, health care and education. It has also caused extensive damage to Palestinian land and property, the agency adds. "The problems affecting the Palestinian population in their daily lives clearly demonstrate that it [the wall] runs counter to Israel's obligation under [international humanitarian law] to ensure the humane treatment and well-being of the civilian population living under its occupation," it said in a statement.

The event will be held Friday, July 30, 2004 at 7PM at the William Pitt Union. This event is sponsored by the Palestinian Solidarity Committee. For more information please contact: pittsburghadvocate@yahoo.com

Peace, not War
by ANGEL Sunday, Jul. 25, 2004 at 4:05 AM

Peace not War......Build the Wall on the Green Line....
Palestinian State in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza. What ever happened to the Road Map to a two State Solution?
You would end up with Israel with a majority Jewish Population and Palestine with a majority Muslim Population.
This would allow for the Israeli Military to Guard and Control the Israeli pre 1967 borders instead of confiscating Palestinian Land and Demolishing Palestinian Homes in the West Bank and Gaza that only goes to fuel the need for the Palestinian People to fight for their Freedom.
The Jews who do not like living in the new Palestinian State can feel free to move to Israel if they so choose.
The Arabs living inside Israel can feel free to move to the new Palestinian State if they so choose.
It would sure be better then the never ending conflict we have right now.

Viva Aztlan!

Cut out West Berlin, I mean Austin, and give Texas back. Other than some amazing music, Texas has nothing to offer.

Indigenous people sometimes come back. It's funny that the right-wing nuts and the Wal-Mart "Left Behind" theologians believe that people who left Palestine thousands of years ago should be allowed to return and will steal from US citizens to arm them, but become very upset when the people who were here 100 years ago return.

But then again, those people are programmed by O'Reilly talking points. I wish there was someone to tell me how I felt about issues every morning.

But more Palestinians have died
by ANGEL Monday, Aug. 02, 2004 at 3:23 AM

Who are the real victims?
How many People have died and how in the last three and one half years since this struggle for Palestinian Freedom began?

3110 Palestinian People including 590 innocent children.
972 Israeli People including 111 innocent children.
700 hundred innocent children is to many to die because Israel refuses to allow the Palestinian People to have their small state in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza, which is only 22% of what is Today Israel, West Bank and Gaza. This is not to much to ask so that 4,000,000 Palestinians can be free from the brutal Israel Occupation and Oppression.

And thousands of people made homeless because of home demolitions in the West Bank and Gaza.

You try to make terrorism palatable with the "struggle for Palestinian Freedom" nonsense. There's nothing like a mindless terrorist sympathizing sloganeer to spam the IMC.

Strange
by Zero State Solution Monday, Aug. 02, 2004 at 3:46 PM

Why does a Nazi sympathizer(in this case Irving) prefer the Israelis to the Palestinians? Do you feel the Grand Mufti failed your Reich in WWII or is it the role the Nazis (and the Zionist collusion in the Holocaust) played in setting up the "state" of Israel?

We'll let your Orwellian words speak for themselves. I will say this, however: Amin Al Husseini must be smiling down on you.

Freedom for the Palestinian People equals Peace for Israel
by ANGEL Monday, Aug. 02, 2004 at 11:54 PM

Tit for Tat is getting us nowhere, as proof you can see there is still conflict after thirty six years. So you have to look at the problem as it stands today, and do the right thing so both people can live in peace and with freedom.
If only one side has freedom, the other side will always be seeking it, in anyway they can. That is why there have been wars as far back as we can remember.
Thirty six years of war should be enough for such a small number of people, when you consider the World Population.
You can save Israel by allowing the Palestinian People to have their small state in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza.
There are 1,200,000 or so Arabs living inside Israel Proper.
There are 400,000 or so Jews living inside the West Bank and Gaza.
Trying to remove all the settlement can be an almost undoable task.
So Set the Borders for Israel to it Pre 1967 Border (Green Line) and have the State of Palestine inside the West Bank and Gaza.
If the U.N. can decide the Borders of Israel in 1948.
The U.N. can decide the Borders of Palestine in 2004.
Almost every nation on earth has more then one ethnic group or religious group. So why not Israel and Palestine?
It would sure be better then the never ending conflict we have right now.

What does Orwell have to do with anything?
You didn't answer the question.
Please explain your one-sided anti-Semitism. I understand the primitive 'logic' in the Xtian death cult's proscribed role for the Israelis and bringing back 'Jay-sus', but why do you white power types favor the Zionists?
