Celebrate the Anarchist history of May Day and the 8 hour day fight. Remember Lucy and Albert and August and all the rest. If we understand where we have been we can understand where we are going!
REMEMBERING HAYMARKET: MAYDAY 2005
Sunday, May 1st, 3 pm at the Thomas Merton Center (5125 Penn ave).
Presentation and discussion on the events surrounding and involving the martyrdom of the Haymarket anarchists. Come to eat some vegan snacks and to listen to historical narratives and speeches about and by Lucy Parsons, Albert Parsons, August Spies, Sam Fielden, etc.
Come and learn about the struggle for the eight-hour day. Fall in love again with the radicals whose sacrifices are uncelebrated and suppressed by those who are still afraid of the ideas of those who were willing to fight and die for a freer society. Honor with us the history of resistance passed on to us by the Haymarket 7– not the history of oppression passed on to us by this capitalist, imperialist system.
Bring your sympathy, passion, and open minds. Come and remember how their sacrifice lives on in our resistance.
Sponsored by your friendly, neighborhood, Bloomfield Free State anarchists.

Several activists will be reading selected speaches by some of the folks intimately involved in the Chicago anarchist movement of the 1880s and 90s. And Kenyon Zimmer will give some historical perspective by explaining the importance of the Haymarket Anarchists to the current Anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian movement.

Lets see. What did my first comment say about what Kenyon is doing? Oh yes, he will give his perspective on why the Chicago Anarchist Movement is important to the CURRENT MOVEMENT! Sheesh read! And anyway, understanding our own history and giving love to our cutural and political ancestors only roots us more in our ideology and enables us to be better organizers and agitators. I am an anarchist and a revolutionary YOU can be a progressive if YOU want to.

It's nice to see that the good Emperor can spare a minute for us from the busy job of protecting Mexico. Keep up the good work!
"progressive"

No idea is perfectly modern, so things that are 'progressive' are not purely contemporary in their foundings. I mean, the ideals of America were born out of John Locke, who was dead 70 years before the American Revolution. And even his ideals were born from Cartesian philosophies, so even the 'radical revolution' that became America stemmed from ideas that were not modern then.
m-w.com reveals the definition of progressive (as it pertains to political affiliations) as:
Main Entry: 2progressive
Function: noun
1 a : one that is progressive b : one believing in moderate political change and especially social improvement by governmental action
Though, more current usages of 'progressive' have often meant a far more radical mindset, not the moderate political change defined there.. the idea is still the same: What is 'progressive' is the need for social improvement. It's not a new or novel idea, it's the same desire humans have had since the beginning of consciousness, "How can I live better?"
And by the way, I'd like to remind the purported republicans out there of this (the next part of the m-w.com definition):
2 capitalized : a member of any of various U.S. political parties: as a : a member of a predominantly agrarian minor party that around 1912 split off from the Republicans;
