CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: PITTSBURGH SUSTAINABLE DESIGN & GREEN ENERGY EXHIBITION
Canaries in the Coalfields, a local Pittsburgh organization and project of the Thomas Merton Center, is planning a Sustainable Design & Green Energy Exhibition to be held in downtown Pittsburgh on Monday, June 6th. The exhibition will be part of a week-long series of events coinciding with the 'National Coal Show' taking place concurrently at the David Lawrence Convention Center. This message is a call for participants to take part in our Exhibition by bringing their project to display and/or demonstrate to the public.
Our goal as an organization is to raise awareness of city residents about the 'true cost of coal' - the community displacement and environmental devastation caused by coal mining, the poor working conditions faced by miners, and especially the hazardous effects of coal power on the health of city residents due to the air pollution, mercury release, and small particulate emissions from burning coal. In addition to highlighting the hazards of being an 'energy sacrifice zone' for the rest of our nation's electricity needs, our aim is to work within the community to build a grassroots movement to push for a different future - one in which we don't destroy the places where we live in order to be able to turn on the lights, but rather one in which we can live in harmony with our environment and still meet our needs.
This is where the Sustainable Design & Green Energy Exhibition fits in - we know of many technologies, designs, and projects developing right now that realize this vision of the future and demonstrate that real, even practical, alternatives to fossil fuel dependency do exist. Seeing is believing, and by offering tangible examples of sustainability and conservation, we hope to inspire our fellow residents of Pittsbugh to join the growing movement for the widespread adoption of green practices in city planning, private development, and in our personal lives.
We hope you will join us in this effort. If you are working on a project that you think could be part of this Exhibition, please contact us as soon as possible, so that we can make sure to include you. If you know anyone that you think should be involved, please tell them about this Exhibition and urge them to take part. If you have access to any other means to disseminate this call for participants, please do so by any means you see fit. Thank you for taking part in the effort to build a brighter future for us all.
For a greener future,
Canaries in the Coalfields
