"'NEVER AGAIN' OVER AGAIN" — on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Letters

‘Never Again’ Over Again

- by Joseph Anderson

Berkeley city councilperson Kris Worthington’s letter to the Daily Cal (“Lurking Legacy of Discrimination,” May 3) deals with Holocaust Remembrance Day and the very profound tragedy European Jews suffered under the Nazi regime. We are called again to learn the lessons of history. But have we?

The primary lesson was supposed to be “Never again!” But, a very sad disappointment — and even for many Jews, including some Holocaust survivors — is that we really have not learned. For, as I grew up seeing the horrors revealed in Holocaust documentaries and movies, I thought that “Never again!” meant never again for all humanity — not just never again for European Jews. Where is remembrance day for the Native American, the black slave, the Filipino, the Armenian, in effect the Vietnamese, and the U.S. Vietnam war expansion-triggered Cambodian holocausts?

Blacks were also victims of Nazi Germany's holocaust machine that consumed other ethnic minorities like the Roma, in addition to the mentally handicapped, and before that blacks were genocidal victims of Germany's colonizations in Africa — as with genocidal Western European colonizers (there and in the Americas).

As a member myself of an often oppressed minority whose religious traditions have identified with the Biblical story of the Jews’ oppression, it saddens me to see many pro-Israel Jews oppress others via a foreign state that would claim to embody Jewish values. For African American ideals, “The Promised Land” is not a land to be "reclaimed" after hundreds, or even thousands, of years, citing God as the real estate agent. The Promised Land doesn’t echo the injustices of the past by, in part, replicating them upon others. The Promised Land is the creation of a just society with an appreciation for the diversity of all humanity and equality for all.

I appreciate Worthington’s letter, but I object that it makes it seem like Berkeley has become a bastion of Jew-hatred: “In Berkeley itself, Jews have far too frequently been victims of hate crimes,” he writes.

California criminal-justice statistics show that hate crimes for all minority groups have gone down — except for indigenous Middle Easterners and Muslims.

Kris writes that overt prejudice, discrimination and institutionalized exclusion are unacceptable. But, that’s exactly what Jews who commemorate the Holocaust — yet who also ideologically believe in an exclusionary Jewish state — support every day for Israel.

Others, like many of us, like “the good Germans” of another era, turn our heads away from this human rights catastrophe against, in turn, another 'despised' minority: the Palestinian people. Their resistance to brutal ethnic cleansing is, ironically, labeled “anti-Semitic.”

To paraphrase Worthington, Holocaust Remembrance Day should cause us to reflect, to learn that the horrors of all these catastrophes did in fact happen, to support the oppressed everywhere, and to join in the activism to say, “Never again!” — for all humanity.

"Never again!"
by Ariel Sharon & the Chosen People Sunday, May. 15, 2005 at 1:19 AM

Right after we get eliminate the Palestinians -- we swear!

We've already ethnically cleansed them off about 95% of the original land (about 80% officially). We've long established our anti-Palestinian 'Nuremburg Laws'. Right now we're building our ghetto walls for them (about 3 or 4 times the height of the Warsaw ghetto walls) in the West Bank as fast as we can to compliment history's largest concentration camp in the Gaza strip. We had to kill about 84 of their children - oh how mightily we tried to provoke them - before the first suicide bus bomb went off in retaliation and desperation in the '90's, killing any Israeli children. All this, until we can demonize them to the world's satisfaction and come up with The Final Solution for them.

After we finally dispose of the Palestinian vermin around us, we swear, "Never again!"

Question for the Zionist "Fatah" poser:
by ? Sunday, May. 15, 2005 at 11:12 AM

Who were the colonial invaders who came to Palestine to impose an exclusionary Jewish state?

And who planned this colonial invasion and take-over long before the Holocaust - a colonial plan beginning even before the turn of the 20th century?

Answer for Zionist/pro-Israel Jew, "???"
by ? Monday, May. 16, 2005 at 11:37 PM

Zionist/pro-Israel Jew ("???", 15 May): "Who were the invaders who came to Palestine to impose an exclusionary Islamic state?"

So, now, Zionist/pro-Israel Jews would have us believe that the *indigenous/native* people, the Palestinians, were the *invaders* and the European (later, American and other) Zionist Jewish *invaders* were the *indigenous/native* people!

How *creative*!

Or as Malcolm X said:

"European colonialism is the perpetration that tries to make the *lamb* look like the *wolf* and the *wolf* look like the *lamb*."

'NEVER AGAIN'

Niger court frees slave activists
A Niger court has freed on bail two anti-slavery campaigners who had been held for six weeks on charges of fraud. The appeals court in the capital, Niamey, said there were insufficient grounds to continuing holding the men.
Ilguilas Weila and Alassane Biga deny trying to falsely elicit money from foreign donors.

The charges relate to a ceremony to free 7,000 slaves, cancelled at the last minute in March by the government, which maintains slavery does not exist.

London-based Anti-Slavery International has been urging the authorities to release Mr Weila and Mr Biga, who both work for the anti-slave organisation, Timidria.

"The government's actions appear to be a concerted campaign not only to discredit their reputation and the work of Timidria, but also to silence efforts to end slavery in the country," said Anti-Slavery International Africa Programme Officer Romana Cacchioli.

Embarrassed

At least 43,000 people are thought to live in subjugation across Niger, which officially banned slavery in May 2003.

The government says there is a caste system in Niger and members of lower castes have been mistaken for slaves.

The ceremony in March was due to be attended by representatives of the slaves, the government and human rights campaigners at In Ates, near the border with Mali.

A local chief had agreed to the release of the slaves, but authorities now say his letter to Timidria, of which Mr Weila is president, asking for financial aid to rehabilitate slaves was a forgery.

According to Timidria, males slaves are forced to work in farms and tender cattle, while women are confined to domestic duties.

The slave masters take the children from their mothers at two years old - to break the family bond as soon as the child is weaned. And so slavery is perpetuated from one generation to the next.

Anti-Slavery International says President Mamadou Tandja is embarrassed by any talk of slavery at a time when he is head of the West African regional organisation - Ecowas.

Acting under pressure, Niger's parliament made slavery punishable by up to 30 years in prison in 2003.
