The Boy in the Bubble Does Not Bounce; The I-Word Goes Public

Declining approval ratings plus support for impeachment spell trouble for Bush.

A new Zogby Poll, released June 30, shows that even with his flopped rally-the-troops speech under his belt, President Bush did not improve his image or gain in the polls. In fact, his approval rating actually dropped another point from the week before. His job approval rating now stands at 43%--yet another new low point for the Bush presidency. John Zogby bottom-lines it for us:

"The message seems to be pretty clear for Mr. Bush: lay off the partisan rhetoric and work to find compromise solutions."

What's more, 42% of respondents said they would favor impeachment proceedings if it turns out that the President lied about his reasons for going to war in Iraq.

Two things that I find interesting are 1) the word "impeachment" has been introduced in the mainstream, and 2) only 42%? By that logic, a murder suspect could go free, even if a jury believed he was guilty. If he's guilty, he's guilty. Jeez.

Some would argue that the act of impeaching a president is so bad for the nation that it should only be considered as a last resort. Yeah, tell that to Bill Clinton. I would submit that enduring another three years of BushCo would be worse.

Do I actually believe that Bush could be impeached? Not really. But at least the word is out there; the cat is out of the bag, and won't be put back in. As the administration's credibility and moral authority continue to decline, it will become harder and harder for the neo-crazies to throw their weight around, and that can only be a good thing.

Oh, and one just more time for the search engines: impeachment.
