In solidarity with the POG protesters that were brutally attacked we will hold a mass mobilization in Dekalb Illinois to shut down a local recruiting station.
I was so appalled by what I saw on this site that I decided to hold a protest on my campus, Northern Illinois University, to shut down the local recruitment station and to raise awareness about police brutality, aggressive and deceiving recruitment techniques used by the military, and the Iraq war. It would be great if someone from POG or from the Pittsburgh activist scene could make the trip out to speak at this event. The thoughts and well wishes of the entire Chicago and Illinois activist community are with the victims of the 8/20 protest. Below is the message I sent to chicago.indymedia.org and many other peace groups.
A27 Dekalb Mobilization
Saturday, August 27 @ 1:00pm at Lucinda ave. and University Circle dr.
Anti-War * Anti-Military Recruitment * Anti-Police Brutality* Equal Rights
(Please forward widely)
On August 20, Pittsburgh police attacked non-violent demonstrators that were peacefully protesting outside an Army recruitment office. Police used pepper spray, batons, tasers, and even K-9 units to disperse the crowd. One woman was tasered for almost twenty continuous seconds after she had already been pepper sprayed and subdued by three large officers. Also, a 68 year old woman was bitten by a K-9 unit in the buttocks when she wasn’t able to flee fast enough. The full story as well as photographs and videos of the event are at http://pittsburgh.indymedia.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=375&category_id=4 These actions taken by the Pittsburgh police are despicable and should not be taken lightly. In response to this event I’m calling for a mass mobilization in Dekalb, IL on August 27.
We will be protesting the war in Iraq, the use of police brutality against men and woman of peace, and the aggressive, deceiving recruitment techniques used by the military as well as their sexist, racist, and homophobic policies. We can no longer sit by and watch our friends and family members be sent off to die in a war that is fueled by oil, greed, hate, and lies. We can no longer sit by and watch the police use illegal techniques to stop our right of free speech and to peacefully assemble. We must act now. Parking is available in the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center parking lot. The entrance to the parking lot is on the West Lincoln Highway about a half mile west of South Annie Glidden road. To the east of the parking lot are four towers, we will meet just east of those towers in a clearing at noon. At 12:45 we will march to the local recruitment station which is located at the corner of Lucinda Avenue and University Circle drive. We will stay there as long as we have to in order to make sure that no recruiting will be done that day.
P.S. If anyone could supply a PA system/megaphone that would be a huge help.
