University of Pittsburgh’s Campus Women’s Organization Takes Back the Night

Pittsburgh, PA -- On Tuesday, October 25th, the Campus Women’s Organization will hold Take Back the Night, a march and rally to raise awareness of sexual assault and violence on our campus and throughout Pittsburgh. Take Back the Night was originally created in the 1970s by women in Germany who wanted to “take back the night” from criminals and rapists, reclaim their freedom and streets, and march together in solidarity. In 1978 the event was brought to college campuses to address the growing issue of sexual assault and violence on campuses.

This year, Take Back the Night will begin in the William Pitt Union ballroom at 6 PM with a brief introduction of the event and the night’s performers. Following will be a march and rally through Oakland. Upon return to the William Pitt Union, there will be performances by local bands and University of Pittsburgh groups. The night will conclude with an open-mic speak-out, a deeply personal and moving aspect of the night which will be closed to the media.
