2,000 TOO MANY: Emergency Protest on the Day After the 2,000th U.S. Soldier is Killed in Iraq
The day is coming when the 2,000th U.S. soldier will have died in Iraq. That is 2,000 too many.
We need to use the 2,000 milestone to remind people of the harsh consequences of enlisting in the U.S. military as well as the human cost of the war. So far, 1976 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, and more than 15,000 have been wounded. U.S. soldiers are at grave risk in Iraq, and continue to suffer even after they come home. Troops returning to the U.S. are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and are turning up in homeless shelters in cities through the country. The risk for Iraqis is even more severe: Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed in the war, and hundreds of thousands of lives have been devastated, even according to the most conservative estimates.
Meanwhile, the Iraq war has cost $200 billion and there is no end in sight. That is $200 billion too much. It's money that could be better spent on health care, education, housing and public transportation here at home.
Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) is asking that people join us for an emergency counter-recruitment rally and march starting at 7PM at Carnegie Museum Dinosaur in Oakland. Bring candles, flashlights, drums and whatever else you feel will help express your outrage over the tremendous loss of life in this pointless and costly war and the lies that sustain it. The event has been endorsed by the Thomas Merton Center Anti-War Committee.
ALSO NOTE: Before coming to the POG rally, consider attending a women's march through Oakland that Pittsburgh chapters of the American Friends Service Committee, the Women’s League For Peace and Freedom and Code Pink are organizing. Their silent candlelight march starts at 5:30 PM, at the Friends Meeting House, 4836 Ellsworth Ave. Wear black. (Men are also invited.)
Though one can't predict the exact date when the 2,000 mark will be passed, it does seem likely that it will be late-October or early-November. Please check http://www.organizepittsburgh.org regularly for updates or email pog@mutualaid.org.
WHAT: Emergency Anti-War protest/Counter-Recruitment Rally and March.
WHEN: 7pm on the day AFTER the 2,000 mark is reached.
WHERE: The Carnegie Museum "Dinosaur" (Forbes Ave., Oakland).
Similar vigils and protests are being organized around the world on the day after the 2,000th US soldier has been killed. For a complete list visit http://www.afsc.org/2000 .

hey i always get updates on casualties in Iraq, etc from icasualties.org/oif/ and they are often quicker with such updates that other outlets. What news outlet are we using for when it hits 2,000? Because some may have 1,999 while others have 2,000 at the same time. I know it seems trivial but don't be surprised if this issue comes up regarding people knowing when to gather

What is more foul, dishonest, and despicable than a bunch of filthy peaceniks waiting around in anticipation for U.S soldiers to die so they can get their march on and pretend they give a shit? Nothing. These people are lower than terrorists. At least the terrorists are honest about what their doing.

Kevin & Nessie
by 2 iconoclasts I like a lot Friday, Mar. 25, 2005 at 7:35 AM
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, gentleman and ladies.
I enjoyed seeing both these names, Kevin of Yuppie Eradication fame among other worthwhile initiatives, and Nessie, a conspiracy theorist par excellence. These are two local personalities and writers whose courage and originality with regard to prose put San Francisco on the anarchist literary map. Both are so legendary in our own time that now there are knock offs and imitators and wannabees worldwide. But if you've followed their noble topics and pursuits over the eons as I have, you'll recognize their individual philosophies and styles, the high IQ of the letters they string together, the battles they choose, and the battles they choose to walk away from, which helps in discerning the BS from the brew here.
I agree that Kevin has a lot integrity, and he was helpful as one simple voice of reason during the natural yet nasty fissure of the bay area indymedias. He is so secure in his singularly deliciously subversive identity that he does not need to destroy others in order to feel good about himself. He is affiliated with, and he is independent of, and he is above and beyond, the brand name Indybay to my mind. More likely than not, he is a heady inspiration to the Indybay collective, not another needy ego looking to feed off whatever blog is the most happening at moment. His crisp clear prose is apparent, and his imitators can only hope to ever capture one iota of his edgy wit. Note that he responds directly by email to direct inquiries by alleged arch-rival Nessie, in a timely and concise fashion, with accurate contact info no less.
All time great line attributed to Keating summed up the splitting of the zygotes of the bay area indymedium for me: "No mass revolutionary movement is going to jump off from a fucking web site!" But we all keep trying. . . .
Nessie is one of the most stalwart internet editors and contributors around, tireless, indefatigable -- and one of the most controversial. He took up for the poor kids that were ousted by the coup de tat within the bay area indymedias, and his loyalty is genuine. He obviously respects Keating, and contacts him directly when there is a dispute.
Nessie may be paranoid, but it does seem that someone is out to get him. I hope no one seriously succeeds in discouraging this precious resource.
What I like about Nessie: his studies of Cointelpro are widely applicable, and there is good advice there. To the extent that paranoia is contagious, his fear of government subterfuge and other uglies take him like a bloodhound to the scent of the story before others catch their breath. I have noted that like the mythical monster that is his namesake, he is much discussed, misunderstood and maligned on blogs all around the globe.
His extensive archiving of links related to the interrelated issues here: forgery, muckraking, shit stirring, and the like--only go to show what a great internet librarian we have. He's quick with a list of hot links for every dispute.
My only concern about Nessie is that he seems hard on animal rights activists wherever they may question animal testing with regard to medical research. I feel this hard line impedes important news from animal rights activists that would be more prevalent on SFIMC.
Indymedia is as good as the participants at any given time.

Chalk another one up to POG's amazing organizational ability. 5pm on the day after the 2000th soldier was killed and there is still no word on if the emergency protest is tonight, the 25th, or tomorrow, the 26th. While the 2000th soldier was killed yesterday, it was announced today. So when is it kids?

These neocons are a product of losing the old folks who remember the Holocaust (ultra-nationalism) and the Depression (shredding the social safety net).

I thought you were the people who thought that truth was relative, so how can some thing be right or wrong, either there is a knowable truth of right and wrong or there is not, you can not have your cake and eat it. If you want not absolute truth then there can be no right or wrong.

Wipe Israel from map, says Iran’s president
>By Gareth Smyth in Tehran
>Published: October 26 2005 21:26 | Last updated: October 27 2005 00:00
>>
Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, Iran’s fundamentalist president, on Wednesday declared that Israel should be “wiped off the map” and warned Arab countries against developing economic ties with Israel in response to its withdrawal from Gaza.
His remarks, delivered at a conference in Tehran entitled “A World without Zionism”, led to diplomatic protests by the UK, France and Spain, while Shimon Peres, Israel’s deputy prime minister, said Iran should be expelled from the United Nations.
In Washington, spokesmen for the Bush administration said the statement underscored US concern over Iran’s nuclear weapons programme.
Mr Ahmadi-Nejad’s comments came as Islamic Jihad, a militant Palestinian group allied to Iran, killed at least five Israelis with a bombing in the Israeli town of Hedera. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility, saying it was avenging Israel’s killing of a West Bank commander on Monday.
US analysts noted that the president’s remarks were not a departure from hardline Iranian rhetoric and did not represent new policy.
But they said the rhetoric was aggressive and badly timed, and would serve to confirm western suspicions of Iran’s more confrontational approach that were raised by the new president’s speeches at the United Nations last month.
However, European diplomats suggested the comments would not derail efforts by France, Germany and the UK to get Iran to return to the negotiating table and halt work at its Isfahan uranium conversion facility. One diplomat said the EU3 had made a point of keeping the nuclear issue separate from Iranian support for militant Palestinian groups during two years of talks.
“As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map,” Mr Ahmadi-Nejad said, citing Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of Iran’s Islamic revolution.
The president told an audience of students there was “no doubt the new wave [of attacks] in Palestine will soon wipe off this disgraceful blot from the face of the Islamic world”.
“Anybody who recognises Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury,” he said, in remarks aimed at Arab states.
Mr Ahmadi-Nejad, who took office in August, was departing from the moderate line of his reformist predecessor, Mohammad Khatami, who argued Iran should be no more radical about Israel than the Palestinians themselves. Reformist figures in Iran have recently warned that Mr Ahmadi-Nejad’s stern rhetoric endangers Iran’s national interest and could encourage the referral of Tehran’s nuclear programme to the UN Security Council. Iran denies its development of the nuclear fuel cycle is for military use.

D,
Since you have some kind of France and UN OCD, and can't get beyond that I guess I should clarify the '2000 lives don't mean shit'. I mean that it doesn't matter to the masters and bosses or the most of the public. In the US we kill each other much faster than that, and that's just homicides, not cars or cigarettes or bad food or water.

That is from "Jeremy's poem". Ok, so Jeremy openly supports the muslim terrorists to kill our soldiers. And this site has the audicity to use the 2000th casualty as some kind of morale point? I have more respect for shit eating bacteria than I do for you people.

You are an idiot. Iraqi's are resisting in many ways, most non-violently. The point he made was you've got to pick a side of whether Iraq should be free of US occupation or not. That's the point. From reading that Poem I seriously doubt he supports anyone dying in this pointless war.

I agree completely with the so-called "xenophobia" thats proudly showing its face and would like to add a few tips to the planet Earth if I may:
1. Human extiction NOW! It's only a matter of time before The Machines take over, we might as well accomodate our future overlords as best as possible.
2. Bring back cannabalism.
3. Git rid of da edacation cystum cuz lerning is rilly dumm.
4. Health care for the rich. Trickle down health care is a great idea. Eventually all the poor will die from cholera and starvation leaving a purely rich society in its wake.
5. Legalize murder.
6. Pay-per-view executions and torture. Big money!
7. Ban bicycles. From now on everyone either drives a Hummer or kills themselves.
This message has been brought to you by the Regressive Party. Vote Cheney/Manson in 2008.
