Monday, January 16 -- On Martin Luther King Day, 100 members of SEIU Local 1199P and their supporters turned out for a loud and lively picket at the Charles Morris Nursing Center in Squirrel Hill. According to SEIU organizers, the Nursing Center's administration is threatening to raise the cost of family health insurance beyond the reach of most workers. As many as 200 employees of the Nursing Center would be affected. Organizers say that management's plan would instantly turn a living wage into a poverty wage, compound a pre-existing problem of staffing shortages, and thus lower the quality of care for seniors residing at the nursing home. SEIU representatives are meeting with management this week and if their concerns aren't addressed they vow to continue to protest the Nursing Center.
