Protesting Haditha Massacre and Other Atrocities
by Nina van Zandt Thursday, Jun. 08, 2006 at 3:55 PM

Pittsburgh anti-war protesters express anger over Haditha and ongoing atrocities. In response to the recent news of atrocities in Iraq 60 people gathered in Shadyside for a short rally and march. Participants called for an end to the Iraq war and expressed revulsion at news of recent atrocities. The march stopped traffic and took over Walnut Street in Shadyside. Protesters moved street signs and a dumpster into the road, smashed at least one window, and threw rocks at corporate stores. Ten police cars, an animal control van, and two unmarked cars showed up and forced the march onto the sidewalk. The march proceeded for another hour through Shadyside and Bloomfield.

All while carrying signs that proclaim Power to the Peaceful. Nice

peace is not the absence of conflict. it is the presence of justice.

i'm for peace, but we're going to have to fight like hell to get it.

by pgh anarchist Sunday, Jun. 11, 2006 at 5:40 AM

Same old liberal bullshit proclaiming destruction of property as "violence". And god forbid we become violent. How dare we use unpeaceful means to attack institutions that use violence every day against people who don't have the U.S. liberal elite's luxury of "non-violence".

RE: Eh?
by Mike Monday, Jun. 12, 2006 at 6:10 PM

I didn't even see the person with the "power to the peaceful" sign. That saying is a bullshit hippy twist on the old call, "power to the people", since calling for the equality in such a way is too radical. Most of the folks there were radicals and I don't think anyone is pretending that this was supposed to be some orderly hippy protest. Someone spoke at the beginning and even said, "I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm pretty fuckin mad."

You Are HURTING the Cause
by Shayla Friday, Jun. 16, 2006 at 2:45 PM
Pittsburgh

The fact that your group thinks it is beneficial to your cause to bring financial loss and inconvenience to people who have nothing to do with the politics of this war just demonstrates to the public (the same people you would like to support from!) who actually have common sense what a bunch of unthinking hippie-wannabe's you are. You all dress like freaks, act like spoiled little brats who throw temper tantrums when they don't get their way and then expect the public to listen to you as if you had something intelligent to say? I am against this war too, but people who use a desire for peace as an excuse to commit vandalism against innocent bystanders and their property are detrimental to the entire cause - YOU are your own worst enemy; YOU are making yourselves look like idiots incapable of logical thought and yet think it somehow makes you cool and tough. You are the laughing-stock of 99% of the people who pass your little marches - people think you are funny and pathetic - not accomplishing anything but making a spectacle of yourselves in a negative way. Just thought you might like to know that you are alienating like-minded people who would otherwise be on your side and work with you...

by Jericha Friday, Jun. 16, 2006 at 2:49 PM

The "The Power to the Peaceful" sign you are bashing, saying would never be used and you not seeing is in the sixth picture from the top, Genius. Yeah, you are someone I would listen to about ANY kind of issue...

jay40@eart

shayla. what would be involved in working with you and like minded people? what kind of anti-war efforts do you find effective? how do you propose ending this war? nothing wrong with bashing what others are doing as long as you have some ideas of your own. you're never going to reach the people your slamming without showing them a better, more effective, way. if all you have to offer is saying you look like freaks people are probably going to continue doing what they're doing. because honestly, what is the alternative?

Same old authoritarian crap
by yinsurgent Friday, Jun. 16, 2006 at 3:52 PM

Democrat, Republican, whatever. Folks like Shayla care only for business as usual, as anything else can be considered a threat to their privilege.
If you vote, pay taxes, or participate in this economy, you have something "to do with the politics of this war".
People are being blown up and starved all over the world, and you worry about a window and a dumpster.
It's the same deluded mentality that make the fundementalist kooks believe that the Easter zombie is going to take them to heaven or that electing a Democrat will make the world OK.
Work with us? How? Offer me a petition to sign? Tell me to vote? Pray?
I hope the Democrats take back congress, just so you liberals will go back to "supporting" the war and the crusader troops like you did when Clinton bombed Iraq for 8 years, as well as his other humaniterrorist misadventures.

"People are being blown up and starved all over the world, and you worry about a window and a dumpster."

Conversely, what effect does breaking windows or pushing dumpsters into the street have on people being blown up or starving? You want attention? You're getting it but unfortunately for you you're being perceived mainly as kids who like to break things.

You want to continue on this course? More power to ya, just don't complain when you get arrested or when no one takes you seriously.

by Goals are for hockey and soccer Monday, Jun. 19, 2006 at 5:13 PM

I have no idea what is accomplished through property damage at retail outlets and interference with the selling of overpriced crap when opposing a war fought primarily for the purpose of creating new markets for consumer goods.
It's the responsiblity of mother country radicals.

If I wanted attention and/ or arrested, I'd cross imaginary lines with Cindy Sheehan while singing "We shall overcome"

Huh?

Thanks for completely dodging the question with some rhetorical nonsense.

I answered (or in your case a.n.s.w.e.r.ed) your question. I think I did so without using any big words. It sorta crimps your 'no blood for oil' mantra, and points out that we all share responsiblity for what is happening in Iraq, which is confusing and offensive to the lesser-evilism embraced by what passes for a liberal these days. I suppose it does become rhetorical nonsense to you, due to the use of any liberal's least favorite word-"responsiblity"
You should probably moveon(dot org), we don't need you, and you'll fall off if the democratic wing of the US war party regains any type of majority.
You can't make omelettes without breaking eggs, and since huge parts of the National Guard are deployed in Iraq, breakfast needs to be served.

I got your boy, boy
by Elroy Face Wednesday, Jun. 21, 2006 at 3:41 PM

What makes you think I'm a liberal? Because I commented on the irony of protesters carrying signs decrying violence while breaking windows?

Your basic premise seems to be that if world events don't play out according to your pre-conceived notions, then it's perfectly ok to show your disapproval by just f'ing shit up. What if others disapproved of your actions? Can they just go to your parents house, drag you out of the basement, and kick your ass?

I could take you a lot more seriously if you were demonstrating on the streets of Kathmandu, but Pittsburgh?!! You're either trying to impress your buddies or get into Anarchist Sally's pants.

Someone's ungrounded
by fantasy baseball Wednesday, Jun. 21, 2006 at 5:30 PM

Glad to see mommy gave your aol privileges back.

I assume you're a liberal because you whine and offer no solutions, then bring up Kathmandu (liberals say, politcal violence is OK, as long as it is in the past or not in the USA)

Working folks like myself built this garbage, and we can break it if we want. Call it 'sweat equity'

And yes you can be dragged out of your mom's basement, by the local, state, fed, or any other paid terrorist

irony
by taking up word space Wednesday, Jun. 21, 2006 at 11:05 PM

that's not irony... violent mass slaughter and umm... breaking some things aren't quite on the same plane... nontheless... the American Apparel store is now smashed up... wouldve been better to hit the more sweatshop based crap, ya know... I'm not sure when that happened but...

but what's ironic about that anyhow...

and I'm sure AA is insured so, it's not comparable to a thousand dead kids or anything.

but other dude is right about the liberals falling off, though, hopefully will be proven wrong (feigned optimism)

Yeah right on, you ain't nothing but a buncha punk ass bitches that are out to impress your little hood friends. Get back to me when you actualy assume some responsibility in the world. Until then we'll all just get a big kick out of your little hissy fits. Oh wait, you're a 'black bloc', you're 'speaking out to power'! *LMAO*
Do me a favor and copy all these posts down so when you hit puberty you can look back to this special moment.
I used to throw eggs at cop cars when I was 13, I should have had the imagination to declare that this was striking out at the jackbooted thugs of the military industrial complex, or that I was striking a blow for the starving people of the world. Please keep posting, this is a great source of amusement!

If you think this is funny, the clearchannel hate-radio station here has a local show with a hillarious dirty old man, who uses rock songs out of context, and a transsexual sidekick, who whines about the children like some Kathie Lee Gifford female-impersonator, she is also fond of applying Jay-sus where he doesn't belong.

As a casual observer and sometimes commentator, I have to say that Shayla and Elroy Face's comments are about the most concise and accurate reflection of the movement to date. They sum up alot of my feelings about this mess.
To Shayla and Elroy: good job.

I know this will spark the inevitable denonuciations and straw man's from our more radical bretheren, but it seems that those people really need to take this humble criticism to heart, and reexamine their structures tactics and organizations, while keeping in mind this shitty truth: perception is 90% reality...that is why there are professional politicians and the PR firms that love them, after all.

On another note, I noticed the posting has taken its time tested meandering of course and topic...hmmmm

I really wasn't trying to cook breakfast. After review, I didn't see where I suggested making concessions of any of type. I did suggest that activists and others consider other factors that sometimes get the cold shoulder in the meeting to plan the next meeting. If it was unclear, I will do a better job next time.

My signs of support for hilary will be in short supply; I don't vote. Sorry to disappoint yet again.

Thank you for not voting

The mild property destruction was spontaneous and not carried out by the 'meeting about the next meeting' types.

Either way, this is the only media coverage of this event.
