leaflet handed out at cmu for mlk day
For Martin Luther King’s Birthday,
CMU: Pittsburgh needs more buses
Not bombs!
At a recent press conference, CMU president Jared Cohon handed out
his own press release about support by CMU's "Allegheny
Conference on Community Development's" for city-wide bus service
cuts, rates hikes and hundreds of bus driver layoffs. At the
same time, CMU has been sporting its new line of killer robots and of
course its ongoing military contracting which is now taking place in
several departments and the off-campus think tank SEI, the Software
Engineering Institute.

Dr. King fought for people's dignity that they may have the right not
to sit in the back of the bus. Now if President Cohon gets his way,
there will not even be a bus to ride.
Martin Luther King would have been amazed that a place of higher
education would be building weapons of war and encouraging city
leaders to leave their citizens with no way to get to school, the
airport or work.
Join us in our effort to disarm CMU!

The Allegheny Conference is not a part of CMU. It's the organization of big business in Pittsburgh.

The president of CMU is also the chair of the Infrastructure Committee of the Allegheny Conference. He is very much a part of the conference. The Allegheny Conference represents big fat business interests and CMU is certainly a big fat business. The CMU president was in the room to offer support at the press conference where Port Authority CEO Steve Bland and County CEO Dan Onorato announced the elimination of over half of the bus routes in the county. The fact that Jared was present at this news conference with a prepared statement supporting the public transit cuts means that he and the Allegheny Conference had a heads up on this; something not given to the bus riding public. So, indeed the good president of CMU is very much playing a role in the final demise of public transit in this region. Take that to the Urban Planning class. Oh, where is Dr. Florida when you need him? (joke)
