The idea of a tripod is that it's not something that can really be moved without a great deal of work, difficulty and danger to both the person in the tripod and people around them. Thus, it stays up really long and blocks car traffic.
how well did the tripod work?

I think the tripod is a very creative idea and looks kind of fun. It's like a mini tree sit.
Q:
How effective was the tripod compared to the lock boxes?

The tripod wasn't moved, but it was in a position where the police decided it wasn't worth moving. Causation or accident? It's hard to say.
If the tripod had been on 43rd near the rear gates, the outcome certainly would have been different. What would have happened, I don't know.
