Just wanted to share these photos I took today and a narrative I posted of today's rally. I'm a photographer, and felt it was the least I could do to try and document today's event.
Please visit: http://www.pbase.com/marymervis
The gallery is entitled 'pgh peace march 07'
Merton Center - you did an amazing job! Once again! (Photos from last year's march are also on this site.)
Let's hope we don't need to be doing this again next March...

ARREST!
by ANON
Monday, Mar. 26, 2007 at 3:13 AM
It's also important to note that the AWC asked the Pittsburgh police to arrest someone at the protest.
These thugs couldn't deal a minor disturbance on their own so they had to call in the state to deal with their problems....
Maybe if they spent half as much time dealing with this issue as they spent on dealing with the possiblity of militant resistance (they had dozens of 'peace guides' blocking both military recruitment stations along the march route) they wouldn't have to call in the police to deal with their problems.
It's also worth noting that that organizers lied to people who were asking about what happened... People inquiring about what happened were told that the individual who was arrested was a right wing counter protester.

The person arrested was shouting bible verses, calling the speakers and marchers "heathens" and liars. While I do not condone the use of police power to deal with the situation, the man arrested was certainly a disruptive counter-protester. If the organizers felt it necessary to call in police power to have the individual removed, which they clearly did, (which again, i cannot condone) the best thing would have been for the police to escort the man away that be the end of it. Arresting him was certainly not necessary.

The poster ANON, made this same comment on one of the other series of pictures from this march (the one that currently has 6 comments). Anyway, if you find it you will also find Anti-War Committee organizer Pete Shell's comments that neither he nor any of the other organizers asked for this guy to be arrested.
It appears that ANON is just trying to plant false information to try and blacken the reputation of local organizers.
To all involved, a great job with the march, and getting media attention. Now how to we continue our work in the day to day struggle?
In solidarity.

ANON, you also said that the organizers lied when they said that the guy arrested was a right wing counter protestor.
I just saw a picture of him on here with a bible in hand, and a US Army lanyard around his neck. I'm not saying anything, but I'm just saying...
Typical

The fact that the arrestee was carrying a bible and securing his bus pass with a free US Army lanyard justifies an act of violence? Using the police as enforcers is no different than using any other gang to impose your will through force of arms. Had the person arrested become physically abusive, then self-defense of some form is a no-brainer, if the situation can't be handled any other way, kidnapping by armed goons may be necessary, but I'm unaware of any such aggressive behavior on his part.
One cannot be a pacifist and recognize the legitimacy of any government, since a government is simply the group with the monopoly on violence within a geographical area. One should respect the gun pointed at them, for obvious reasons, but not its legitimacy.
One of the main reasons the US can't pacify the Iraqi people is despite all their warfighting prowess, they are lousy cops. Policies such as summary arrests, random searches, abuses ala Abu Ghraib, and countless other atrocities and abuses that the 'liberal' media don't report are simply the same tactics and policies used by police in the US, and while not surprising, that the ones who talk the loudest about peace, would in practice perpetuate the same misery, when it benefits their egoes and preserves their privilege.
Looks like they'll have to wait for the Iraqis and hawks who are realistic enough to admit defeat to end this war, the same way they did during Vietnam, although this conflict lacks the GI resistance which contributed to the US withdrawal from SE Asia. So, odds are, through their pursuit of the 'politics of business as usual' the bureaucratic managers of revolt continue to insure that they will be able to have their "peace" parade in late March for years to come.

no there bro, you're putting words into my mouth. i didn't say anything at all that since the guy was carrying a bible, and had a us army lanyard provides justification for the use of violence.
what i did say was that the poster ANON said that people were lying when they said that the arrested counter protestor was from the right wing. i used the obervations that the arrested protestor in question was carrying a bible, and wearing a us army lanyard to make the point that he was most likely a right wing counter protestor...if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...it might be a duck. that's all i'm saying...
