Appeal - Macao belongs to everyone, let’s protect it!
by mlys Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 at 9:43 PM

On saturday May 5th citizens and arts workers entered the Galfa tower to make it into Macao, a new arts centre in Milan. The tower is owned by Fondiaria SAI, whose honorary president is Ligresti. It’s an old office skyscraper situated in the centre of Milan which has been abandoned for more than fifteen years.

The creation of Macao involved lots of people in extraordinary and different ways. For more than a week they have been restlessly working to make this place safe and welcoming. Lots of us every day are experiencing the profound sharing of goals and visions which is forcefully defining a brand new perspective, with the intent of establishing a centre for arts and culture in this city. We are receiving a great amount of requests and proposals from Academies, Universities and intellectuals who want to get a chance to participate in the creation of Macao. They are willing to share their knowledge, provide materials, bring whole classes and workshop groups into a space increasingly shaping itself as something finally conceivable where it is possible to produce beauty and cultural enrichment. All of us strongly believe that the participative process we are living in wonder and enthusiasm finally represents the birth of a new perspective, that will allow us to create and re-think the concept of culture itself, especially in this historical moment which too often leaves culture relegated to a secondary position, because of a widespread crisis that prevents us from imagining the future the way we’d like it to be. We think that at Macao people are instead showing with strength, tenacity and an almost visionary creativity that it is possible to think about relationships and modern ways of living in a totally different way. All of this can become positively contagious. It is important though to be aware of the still existing, heavy and pressing, eviction threats. We should do everything within our power to avoid that this beautiful process ends up overwhelmed by a repressive logic, of any kind. LET’S ALL, CITIZENS, ARTISTS AND INTELLECTUALS, SUBSCRIBE AND SPREAD THIS APPEAL IN ORDER TO PROTECT MACAO. You can subscribe to the appeal by filling out this form providing your NAME and SURNAME.
