Attorney General John Ashcroft has reviewed the actions of the Pittsburgh Police department on March 20 and March 30. Here is his statement.

"From the US Attorney General: We must remember that the foundation of American freedom is free-speech. As the first amendment says, there shall be NO attempt made to limit speech. I have reviewed the actions of the Pittsburgh Police department and have concluded that they acted solely on the basis of their political instincts. Such actions are wholly inconsistent with the actions of patriotic civil servants. As a result, I have asked the District Attorney to drop all charges against all demonstrators. Furthermore, I have asked the Merton Center and the Pittsburgh Organizing Committee to nominate representatives for a new Homeland Freedom board that will ensure that all citizens have the right to dissent and the right to fair, professional treatment by police officers."
