A small but vital group of Pittsburghers hold a vigil to remember the victims of the nuclear holocaust conducted by the United States government on the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki sixty three years ago.

Sixty-three years ago today (8-9-08) the United States government detonated a second nuclear bomb on the people of Japan killing 80,000 children, women & men. ”Fat Boy”, as it was perversely named, was dropped three days following the explosion of “Little Boy” that instantly killed over 140,000 people in Hiroshima. In the following days thousands more died horrific deaths from burns and radiation poisoning.
A small group of Pittsburghers held a memorial service outside the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (SEI), which is largely funded by the US military for various weapons software research. http://www.sei.cmu.edu Participants represented The American Friends Service Committee, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Pittsburgh’s Raging Grannies, The Thomas Merton Center for Peace and Justice, Pax Christi, Black Voices for Peace, and was organized by Duncan & Porter House.
A profoundly moving and haunting threnody for the victims of Hiroshima composed by K. Penderedki played during the vigil. And in a symbolic gesture the steps of the SEI were washed.

The apologists have no justification in trying to "guilt-trip" America for using nukes. The Japanese Empire was committed to carnage and slaughter, and the Emperor would only respond to the same. WWII was a set of circumstances that none of us can fathom. At least there was a clear enemy, unlike today.

Fat Boy, the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, was made from approximately 8 kg of plutonium. Nuclear waste from commercial nuclear power plants contains approximately 1% plutonium. France, Russia and Britain reprocess nuclear waste to separate out the plutonium. Some of the plutonium is used as fuel for other commercial nuclear power plants, primarily in Japan. Because plutonium is a very expensive fuel most of the plutonium from reprocessing remains in storage. At least 300 tons of separated plutonium from commercial nuclear power plants remains in storage around the world. The United States stopped reprocessing nuclear waste after India used plutonium from reprocessing to create its own nuclear bomb. Barak Obama has said that we should consider "reusing" nuclear waste as a solution to the nuclear waste problem. I would sooner consider living in hell. Of course George Bush (under the supervision of Paul Wolfowitz) is doing everything possible to reinstitute the reprocessing of nuclear waste in the United States on a grand scale. In the long run, such an endeavor would be far worse than the war in Iraq. For more information Google "Global Nuclear Energy Partnership." Good luck.

Those Japanese who died at Hiroshima were not the ones who committed the Rape of Nanking. Almost all were civilians, mostly old people, women and children. If we are to condemn an entire people for crimes only some committed, then all Americans deserve what whatever hideous atrocity that terrorists can inflict upon us, because it was Americans who committed the massacre at Wounded Knee.
